Frenulum rupture: what to do when the frenulum of the penis tears?

Breaking the brake is a relatively recurrent sexual accident during intercourse. Although impressive, it is generally not serious if you have the right reflexes. What should be done if the frenum of the penis breaks?

What is the brake and what is it for?

The frenulum is a short, thin piece of skin that sits between the inner side of the foreskin and the glans. The foreskin, on the other hand, is the piece of skin that covers the glans on the outer part of the penis. When the penis is erect, the glans is uncovered and the foreskin retracts. Thus, the frenulum is the part which connects the foreskin to the base of the glans, and is involved during the cracking (action which allows the foreskin to be raised or lowered on the glans). This piece of skin, very thin, triangular in shape, is also called “fillet of the penis”. In the event of a tear, if the brake is completely torn, then we speak of complete rupture. Conversely, we speak of partial rupture if part of it remains.

What is a broken brake?

A frenulum break is a tear in the piece of skin that connects the foreskin to the glans. It manifests as severe pain and profuse bleeding. This accident, which usually occurs during sexual intercourse, but which can also occur following masturbation, is however relatively benign. This is because although the wound is bleeding a lot, due to the high number of blood vessels in the area, there are no serious complications possible. Thus, men whose penis is circumcised are not affected by this sexual incident, since they no longer have a foreskin. Breaking the brake is therefore not possible. Most of the time, the brake remains in place despite the tear: it is only a partial cut.

Why does the brake tear?

If it is too short, the frenulum may interfere with the cracking as the foreskin withdraws from the glans. However, during sexual intercourse, the back and forth movement forces the cracking. Thus, if the skin that connects the two is too short, it can tear, due to a movement that is too short or too intense. A brake is therefore in most cases what causes the tear. Sudden movement or an insufficiently lubricated gear can also cause this injury. In fact, this accident often occurs during the first sexual intercourse, when one does not yet have a lot of experience and that one does not perfectly control his movements. Indeed, with experience, we learn to apprehend movements that may be too sudden and to identify them upstream. It is also at this time that it is discovered that the brake is possibly too short, and that a plasty operation of the brake can be considered.

Reflexes to have in case of a tear

The first reflex to have is to compress the wound to stop the bleeding, which can be relatively heavy. However, once the wound is compressed, it should not be left as it is. Indeed, the wound is neither disinfected nor healed. It is therefore imperative to go see a doctor or urologist to examine the injury. The latter will decide either to take care of you immediately, or to see you again later in order to make an appointment for an operation and resolve the problem related to the brake.

What are the consequences of breaking the brake?

The classic surgical intervention following a so-called complete frenulum rupture involves removing a small part of the foreskin. This operation, called brake plasty, will make it possible to lengthen the link which connects them and thus prevent a tear from occurring again. This is a ten-minute procedure, performed under local anesthesia. At the end of this, a period of abstinence of 3 to 4 weeks is imposed, in order to allow the wound to heal. In the event of an incomplete rupture, it is necessary to wait until the wound has healed and the skin has completely reformed to consult a doctor and see if the operation is necessary or not. Finally, know that it is quite possible to live without brakes and that there is no contraindication to sexual intercourse or any effect on the pleasure felt following an operation.
