How to hem curtains at home: tips and tricks
Curtains are an essential element in every home. It complements the interior of the room and creates coziness in it. In addition, high-quality curtains perfectly protect from excess light and prying eyes of passers-by or residents of neighboring houses. But it often happens that this decor element turns out to be too long or wide for the room. In this case, you need to hem the curtains with your own hands – it is much easier than carrying them in the atelier. Before you sew your curtains at home, it is very important to do some preparation. Without it, you can irrevocably ruin the material that could please the eyes of residents for a long time.
Once the fabric or finished curtain has been purchased, it is very important to ensure that it does not shrink after washing. This requires:
· Lower all the material, which in the future will be a curtain in the house, into warm water. Leave it there for a few minutes;
· Very carefully squeeze out excess water from the material, hang to dry in a straightened upright state;
· Let the curtains dry to a slightly damp state, and then iron them carefully, taking care not to spoil the fabric;
· Let the curtains hang on the eaves for several days.
This procedure cannot be used on velvet, plush, and velor. It is not recommended to soak and dry natural silk. It is enough just to iron it.
How to sew curtains correctly at home?
As soon as the very possibility of decreasing in size after washing is eliminated, it’s time to hem it. To do this, you need to measure the required length (including the curtain tape) and width. After that, you can proceed directly to reducing the length.
There are two ways to sew the curtains:
· With hands and a needle using a blind seam;
· With a sewing machine.
The first is the most time consuming and complex of all methods. You will have to hem the edges on your own for a long time and painstakingly, constantly making sure that they do not stray and do not bend. With the help of a machine, the seam is neat and smooth, as if from a factory. But there is a big drawback: not every housewife has a sewing machine.
If you plan to hem curtains made of lightweight fabric, you must use the double hem method, that is, fold the edge of the fabric twice, iron and stitch it along its entire length, about 2 millimeters from the outer edge. In this case, it is advisable to put some kind of weight in the form of tulle with a weighting agent inside.
