6 Foods That Will Improve Tooth Enamel: Dentist Tips

It should be understood that even a perfectly matched diet cannot be compared in terms of restorative efficiency with the dental lamination procedure, but regular use of the right foods in sufficient quantities significantly improves the condition of the tooth enamel. What is tooth enamel and why is it thinning?

Tooth enamel is the protective shell of the crown of the tooth. Its thickness reaches 2 mm on working surfaces and fades away closer to its base. It consists of 95-97% inorganic substances, such as crystals of hydroxyopatite, modified with fluorine, magnesium, carbon and some other chemical elements. The rest of the composition is occupied by proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, water. In healthy tissues, their content does not exceed 3-5%.

Tooth enamel is considered the hardest tissue in the body, but it tends to become thinner. This can happen for the following reasons:

  • hormonal failures;

  • metabolic disorders;

  • mechanical factor (malocclusion, bruxism, age-related changes);

  • lack of essential trace elements in the diet in sufficient quantities.

Unlike other reasons, dietary adjustments are easy. Below are the product groups that you should definitely include on the menu.

Milk products

For most, this is the main source of calcium intake in the body. Depending on age, a person needs to consume from 800 to 1200 mg. A liter of milk, 700 g of fat cottage cheese, half a liter of yogurt or 200-300 g of hard cheese (Parmesan is the leader in the list of champion cheeses in terms of calcium content) cover the body’s daily need for this microelement.

Dairy products are a source of vitamin D, phosphorus and magnesium, which together with calcium have a very beneficial effect on the condition of tooth enamel. Yoghurts, kefir, fermented baked milk and other fermented milk products, among other things, contain lactobacilli, which neutralize microorganisms that destroy enamel and cause bad breath.

Vegetables and greens

Experienced vegans do not consume milk and its derivatives in food, but do not lack calcium and other trace elements. Why? They know that their deficiencies can be replenished by consuming vegetables and greens on a regular basis.

  • There is more calcium in a cup of cabbage (broccoli, white cabbage, cauliflower, Beijing) than in a glass of milk.

  • 100 g of marjoram and oregano contains two daily doses of this trace element, along with others that are no less useful for the teeth.

  • Green turnips, parsley, arugula, dill, basil, spinach are also rich in substances that help strengthen the enamel.  

Nuts and Seeds

The Aztecs believed chia seeds one of the main reasons for its power. And not in vain. This superfood is high in calcium, magnesium, selenium, copper, sodium, potassium, zinc, phosphorus and tons of vitamins. Its regular use effectively strengthens the enamel, but it does not hold the lead in this food group in the context of the benefits for the teeth.

There are far less exotic, but more potent seeds. This is poppy seed, sesame и linen. A total of a tablespoon of these seeds will bring the body 1500-1000 mg of calcium in an easily assimilable form, a daily dose of phosphorus, vitamin D3, magnesium, iron and a number of useful microelements.

From nuts, preference should be given almonds.

Legumes

Asians cannot imagine their daily diet without soy and its derivatives. Even his famous all over the world tofu cheese they cook from these beans. 100 g of its hard raw variation contains 683 mg of calcium. This means that only 200 g of cheese can cover the body’s daily need for this trace element.

В beans, asparagus, chickpeas, mache, peas calcium is on average three times less, but they can also be considered as a priority source of its replenishment. This is because in legumes it is contained in an easily digestible form and in combination with other beneficial trace elements (vitamin D, phosphorus, magnesium). The addition of these foods to the daily diet in sufficient quantities will significantly improve the condition of the tooth enamel, but it should be understood that the diet alone is not enough for a stable long-term result. Regular visits to the dentist to perform professional hygiene, periodic remineralization, properly selected oral care products are the basis of healthy enamel.
