Yezhovik yellow (lat. To be repaid) is a mushroom of the genus Gidnum of the Ezhovikaceae family.

Yellow hedgehog hat:

Yellowish in color (from almost white to orange – depending on growing conditions), smooth, 6-12 cm in diameter, flat, with edges bent down, often irregular in shape, often grows together with the caps of other mushrooms. The cuticle does not separate. The pulp is whitish, thick, dense, with a pleasant smell.

Spore layer:

On the back of the cap there are pointed spines that easily break off and crumble. The color is slightly paler than the hat.

Spore powder:

White.

Leg:

Length up to 6 cm, diameter up to 2,5 cm, cylindrical, solid (sometimes with caverns), often widened at the base, somewhat paler than the cap.

Spread:

It grows from July to October (mostly in August) in large groups in deciduous, coniferous and mixed forests, preferring moss cover.

Similar species:

The Yellow Hedgehog is very similar to the Reddish Yellow Hedgehog (Hydnum rufescens), which is smaller and has a reddish tint to the cap. But most often Hydnum repandum is confused with Common Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarus). And it’s not so scary. Something else is bad: apparently, considering the yellow Ezhovik an inedible mushroom, they break it, knock it down and trample it for its resemblance to the folk chanterelle.

Edibility:

Yezhovik yellow normal edible mushroom. In my opinion, it is completely indistinguishable in taste from chanterelle. All sources indicate that in old age the Yellow Herb is bitter, and therefore inedible. Do what you want, but I did not notice anything like that, although I tried. Probably, the bitterness of the blackberry is something from the category of inedibility of spruce camelina. “It happens.”
