Urinotherapy: why drink your urine?

Urinotherapy: why drink your urine?

The (supposed) benefits of urinotherapy

Proponents of amaroli or urinotherapy claim that substances continued in the urine, such as vitamins, hormones, minerals, etc., can help the body fight certain diseases. The list is long: asthma, depression, migraine, rheumatism, digestive disorders but also flu, back pain (in local application), ear infections … You can find everything on the sites advocating the technique, even the fact that urine could heal the cancer.

Urine acts sometimes as a poultice, sometimes as a therapeutic elixir, sometimes as a “vaccine”, immunizing against certain pathologies. Note that nothing here is based on scientific studies.

Urinotherapy in practice

In practice, the majority of urinotherapy enthusiasts seem to suggest drinking the urine directly. However, there are also applications in gargling, poultice, massage, etc. It can also be used in the form of inhalation, drops (against ear infections in particular), and the list is long, here too.

Does it work?

Nothing proves that this practice, publicized by certain stars or athletes, is effective. No serious study on the subject has been conducted. You should know that urine is 95% water. For urinotherapy enthusiasts, the remedy comes from the remaining 5%: nutrients, minerals (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus…), hormones, urea and other active metabolites to which they lend therapeutic effects. These are wastes eliminated by the kidneys to maintain a water and ionic balance in the body.

However, is it toxic to indulge in urotherapy? Probably not, at least not immediately, especially since the urine is sterile (except in cases of infection). Several people have survived dramatic situations (shipwreck, confinement, etc.) by drinking their own urine, not being able to have access to water. In doing so, the urine is more and more concentrated in toxins and can become toxic.

But believing that urinotherapy can replace proven treatments, such as antibiotics or cancer drugs, can be a dangerous practice.
