How to choose sunscreen for your face

The use of sunscreen is desirable all year round, because the harm of ultraviolet radiation has been proven by numerous studies. Traditionally, people remember such a cosmetic product only closer to summer, when the amount of sunlight increases significantly, as well as going on vacation. The most unpleasant feature that UV rays can present is the gradual appearance of age spots. You may not protect your face for several years, but in the future this is fraught with the obligatory appearance of age spots.

There are three types of UV radiation:

UBA – those same year-round waves that are not afraid of cloudy weather and clouds. They are able to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, causing skin aging and pigmentation.

UVB – penetrate into the layers of the skin if you are directly in an open space (clouds and glasses are quite an obstacle for them), they can affect the upper layers of the skin, increasing the risk of redness, burns and cancer.

UVC – the most dangerous waves, but at the same time they are absorbed by the atmosphere, so you should not be afraid that they will penetrate the ozone layer.

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a sunscreen. The first is filters that provide that same reflective sun protection for the skin. Among them, two types are distinguished – physical and chemical (they are also mineral and organic). The physical components include two components – zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. But there are a huge number of chemical filters, it’s impossible to list them all, but here are some of them: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octocrylene, octinoxate, etc. Pay attention to the SPF protection indicator – sun protection factor, the indicated figure next to it means what percentage of type B sunlight is able to block this cream. For example, the action of SPF 50 protects the skin from UV radiation by 98-99%, provided that you apply it tightly and renew it in time. A cream with an SPF value of 30 is already 96%, and SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB radiation.

IMPORTANT! A cream with SPF protection only protects the skin from type B rays, if you also want to protect your face from exposure to type A rays, then pay attention to the following designations on sunscreen packages: UVA in a circle and PA++++. The most reliable sunscreen is the one where several types of filters are presented, but it must be remembered that not a single filter, or even a combination of them, covers the skin from exposure to sunlight by 100%.

The second nuance that will help you make a choice is your skin type. Modern sunscreen formulas have been developed to also perform care functions. We suggest following the recommendations that will help you choose a sunscreen for your skin type:

  • Sensitive skin. Owners of a sensitive type, it is best to choose a cream containing mineral filters, without artificial fragrances and dyes, with soothing substances in the form of niacinamide or centella asiatica extract. You can also consider popular pharmacy brands.
  • Oily and problematic skin. In order not to provoke the appearance of inflammation on oily and problematic skin, choose products with mineral components (without oils and silicones in the composition), they can be a fluid or gel – which do not increase the shine on the face.
  • Dry skin. This type of skin should consider products with an additional content of moisturizing ingredients – hyaluronic acid, aloe, glycerin.
  • Aging skin or prone to pigmentation. This type of skin is best suited for powerful protection, so a sunscreen with a value of at least -50 is needed. In addition, it will be ideal if the product has an anti-aging effect.

Another nuance of sunscreen reliability is the thickness and density of the layer that you apply to your face. Apply sunscreen in a fairly generous layer, 20-30 minutes before going outside. You need to renew the cream every two hours, provided that you plan to be on the street or on the beach for a long time. For the city, an average SPF value is enough, and you can already apply it once a day – in the morning.

Expert Opinion

Kristina Arnaudova, dermatovenereologist, cosmetologist, candidate of medical sciences:

— There are many theories of aging, but the leading position is occupied by photoaging. The bottom line is the detrimental effect of solar radiation on our skin cells, which leads to irreversible destruction, and as a result, to loss of elasticity and skin turgor. Numerous studies have shown a difference in the aging process even in identical twins. So, for example, one of the twins has been doing office work for 15 years, looks 10 years younger than his brother, who is a lifeguard on the beach. And all this is due to prolonged exposure to the sun. Luckily, with SPF (Sun protection factor) sunscreens, we can protect our cells from damaging UV rays and keep our skin looking youthful.

Speaking of such funds, it should be emphasized that for residents of different regions, as well as depending on the season, the level of protection, that is, the figure next to the SPF marking, may vary. Accordingly, in the summer months for residents of the regions, I recommend using a high level of protection SPF 85 or 90, especially this condition applies to the southern regions. In other cases, SPF 15 to 50 may be used.

Currently, a number of cosmetic companies produce decorative cosmetics, which already contain sunscreens, for example, powders, cushions or foundations – which is very convenient. The sun will come out very soon, and I advise you to contact your cosmetologists to purchase professional protection, since such products are the main ones in home skin care.
