How to choose brake discs

In order to choose high-quality brake discs that are suitable for your car, you must take into account the following conditions: your usual speed of movement or driving style, road surfaces, frequency of use of transport.

Without losing sight of the above nuances, when buying, pay attention to the technical component:

  1. Study the parameters of the brake system of your car (hydraulics, pneumatics, combined version).
  2. Solid discs are the most balanced, but ventilated ones behave effectively in the city, as driving modes often change.
  3. The main characteristic is the diameter of the disc: the larger it is, the higher the braking efficiency.
  4. The anti-corrosion coating and the presence of holes allow to extend the service life of the elements.

Types of brake discs

Also, in order to choose a suitable spare part for the brake system, it is necessary to understand the types of discs on the market and their features. Let’s take a look at each one and look at the features in more detail:

  • One piece (non-ventilated)

Features: The spare part is made of cast iron, has a simple design, consists of a rotor and a disk.

Advantages: Inexpensive node with a simple design. Suitable for low-power vehicles that mainly move at low speeds, as well as older models.

Disadvantages: They heat up quickly, dissipate heat slowly, and are not very efficient.

  • Ventilated

Features: Cast iron construction with two piece rotor. Equipped with special cooling channels of various shapes for more intense and efficient cooling.

Advantages: Heat dissipates well, the disc does not overheat, the design contributes to long-term operation, cracks and deformation rarely occur.

Disadvantages: They cost more than whole ones.

  • drilled

Features: The design of the disc made of cast iron has drilled holes, as it is designed for heavy loads, the need for escaping gases and dust.

Advantages: Lighter weight than a one-piece assembly, good pad-to-disc grip, braking quality and factory workmanship.

Disadvantages: Strength is less than other types, reduction of the cooling area due to holes, cracking is possible at the drilling points (stress points appear).

  • slotted

Features: The disk is also designed for high loads, slotted slots are the key to effective gas removal.

Advantages: The presence of grooves contributes to a good cleaning of the surface of the pads from dirt. Motorists note the beauty of the details.

Disadvantages: This type of disc wears out quickly. They have to be changed more often.

  • grooved

Features: The disc is made of cast iron, remains solid, the holes are not through and are drilled only on the surface. This is enough to remove gases.

Advantages: The part is well cleaned during operation.

Disadvantages: Medium strength and wear resistance.

  • wavy

Features: The surface of the product is cast, but with waves around the entire perimeter. As a result, less material is spent on manufacturing, gases and heat are removed efficiently.

Advantages: The parts have a beautiful appearance, are actively installed on motorcycles and sports cars.

Disadvantages: Average wear resistance.

  • Carbon-ceramic

Features: The alloy allows intensive use of the part, it is lighter than cast iron, lasts longer, does not deform from temperature.

Advantages: High heat resistance, braking performance, reliability, durability.

Disadvantages: The most expensive type of parts, only for sports cars.

Popular questions and answers

Sergey Dyachenko, owner of the car service and auto parts store The Garage, shared his experience and talked about the most popular questions and problems that car owners have when choosing and installing brake discs:

How often do you need to change the brake discs?

– It is impossible to answer this question unambiguously. There is no exact number of kilometers after which the part needs to be changed. It all depends on the nature of the ride. There is a minimum thickness of the product that you can focus on.

Manufacturers typically talk about 1mm of wear on the sides of the disc. For solid models it is 10,8 mm, for perforated models it is 17,8 mm. If the disc has a thickness of 22 mm, then you need to change it when it reaches 20 mm.

Can I use discs and pads from different brands?

– Do not do it on one axis. Pads and discs must match exactly in size and parameters.

Is it possible to change the brake disc on one side only?

Do not change discs and pads on the same axle wheel. This will lead to asynchrony in the operation of the brake system.

How not to buy a fake?

– Look at serial numbers, packaging. The originals are marked on the edge. It must not be worn or slanted and must match the package numbers. Check the thickness of the disc over the entire surface, as well as other defects – hooks, deformation, etc.
