The anchovy and canned food from Cantabría celebrate their XV Fair

The municipality of Santoña is decked out to celebrate the next 1, 2, 3 and 4 of May a new edition of the Cantabrian Anchovy and Canned Fair, in which the best cast of producers of such precious fish act as participants .

Fifteen of them will be the ones promoting the event in which the female figure will take on a special role.

Under the motto ‘In feminine and plural’ different events, demonstrations, visits, etc. will be held to pay tribute to the women who have elevated Cantabrian gastronomy to the privileged place it occupies today.

The event is framed as a festival of the fishing sector and its objective is not only fun but also seeks to revitalize all the productive sectors involved as well as the auxiliary industry that accompanies it.

His intention above all is to disseminate the importance of the anchovy, and put the municipality in the center of attention during these holidays.

In the detail of its program of activities, it seeks to promote culinary creation with such an emblematic product through workshops and classes with renowned chefs, invited to put the anchovy in the place it deserves.

For this occasion, the female figure of Gilda is raised to the altars, as a dynamic element for the event. 

At this year’s fair the ‘Ladies of Anchovy’ brand has been established, naming three Chefs for this purpose:

  • Macarena de Castro, Majorcan and new figure of the Balearic Islands.
  • María José San Román, owner and chef of the Monastrell restaurant in Alicante.
  • Zuriñe García, from the Biscayan restaurant Andra Mari, from Galdácano.

The different events that will take place will begin on May 1 in the aforementioned town of Santoña within the fairgrounds located in the Plaza de San Antonio.

The events will be completed with the participation of the Cofradía de la Anchoa that will celebrate its Grand Cabildo on Saturday at the Casino Liceo, which together with the different participating brotherhoods will carry out a commemorative parade as a culmination.

The promotion of the fair is very important to help the fishing sector and as announced by the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development, Blanca Martínez, 

Cantabria wants and has affirmed that this year’s Fair will be a special event in which, in its opinion, Cantabria has much and good to celebrate.
