Telework: how to avoid “dead ass syndrome”?

The generalized teleworking, the curfew at 18 pm… We are more and more sedentary, and very often sitting on a chair in front of our computer. A position that can lead to various disorders: back pain, tension in the neck, stretched legs… and cause an unknown syndrome, called “dead ass syndrome”. What is that ?

What is dead ass syndrome?

The “dead ass” syndrome refers to the fact of no longer feeling your buttocks, as if they were sleepy, after having remained seated for a long time. This disorder is also called “gluteal amnesia” or “gluteal amnesia”.

This syndrome can be painful. When you try to wake the glutes by standing up and walking, you are using other joints or muscles. These can be over-stressed. For example: the knees that carry you. The pain can also sometimes descend down the leg like sciatica.

Buttock amnesia: what risk factors?

This feeling of sleepy buttocks is caused by the muscles of the buttocks which do not contract for a long time, due to lack of physical activity. In fact, you no longer get up, no longer walk, no longer take a coffee break, no longer bend down or go down the stairs.

How to avoid “dead ass syndrome”?

To avoid getting “dead ass syndrome”, get up regularly to do any activity other than your work duties. At least 10 minutes per hour, walk in your apartment, go to the bathroom, do squats, a little cleaning, a yoga position… To think about it, ring a reminder on your phone at regular intervals.

To wake up the lower parts of the body, stretch the hips, legs, buttocks. Contract each of these areas, for example.

Finally, move quickly as soon as you feel a stiff limb or cramp. This will reactivate the circulation of blood and relax the muscles.
