The bottle in question is about The Macallan Valerio Adami 60-year-old, distilled in 1926 and bottled in 1986 and has been described as the “Holy Grail of whiskey”, by whiskey specialist from Bonhams.

The bid held on October 3 by the Boham auction house, since its inception aspired to reach one million euros and finally the sale was closed in Libras 848.750, setting the new world record.

«It is incredibly rare that The Macallan 1926 is available for purchase and this offers whiskey connoisseurs the chance to obtain historic bottles emblematic of XNUMXth century pop culture, ”commented Geoff Kirk, Director of Brand Recognition, after the sale a few months ago of two bottles of the same whiskey that also broke records.

The Macallan 1926 is a liquid aged for 60 years in oak barrels that have previously contained sherry until bottling and launched in 1986.

Of the 40 bottles produced12 were given to British artist Sir Peter Blake, known for being one of the creators of The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper album Lonely Hearts Club album cover; the other 12 were given to the Italian artist Valerio Adami, one of the most acclaimed Pop Art artists of the XNUMXst century. Each artist created a bespoke design for the bottles, making them highly sought after by whiskey collectors.

The piece that has just been sold is number 5 in the series and has belonged to the same owner since its origin. It is one of the exclusive editions made by the artist Valerio Adami and not only the content of the bottle is exclusive. The container itself has an added value as it has a label that is an original work of art by the Italian artist, a true collector’s item of desire.

Although there were 12 bottles of The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926, it is not known how many of them still exist. One is said to have been destroyed in an earthquake in Japan in 2011, and at least one of them is believed to have been opened and consumed.

Valerio Adami (born 1935) is an Italian artist famous for painting bold, flat shapes outlined in thick black lines, in a style reminiscent of comic art. He is one of the most acclaimed pop artists of the XNUMXth century.
