Small chrysanthemums are considered the most winter-hardy. They bloom until late autumn. The choice of varieties is mesmerizing. It is not difficult to grow them, you need to know simple rules.

Planting a small chrysanthemum and conditions for a flower

Experts say that it is better to postpone the planting of small-flowered chrysanthemums until spring. In autumn, the bush is planted only in regions with a warm climate. Ideally, chrysanthemums are bought in the fall to appreciate the color of the flowers. After flowering, the shoots are cut off and the bush is stored until spring in a cold basement. In the spring, the rhizome is planted in open ground. If this is not possible, then the bush is planted in the first half of September or October, so that it has time to take root before frost. In the first winter, the chrysanthemum is covered.

Small chrysanthemums will fit into any design

For planting small-flowered chrysanthemums, an open, sunny place is chosen so that the bushes are well lit and blown out, there is no stagnation of air. Holes are made on a hill so that melt water and sediments do not accumulate at the roots. From this they get wet, suffer from fungal diseases.

The soil for the chrysanthemum should be nutritious, but not too oily. The holes are formed at a distance of 25−35 cm, the curb varieties are planted denser. The bottom of the planting pit is well drained, then filled with humus. At the end of planting, the soil is mulched to provide the necessary moisture.

In the soil rich in mineral fertilizers, the bush grows strongly, flowering occurs later, but it is not so abundant. In some cases, chrysanthemum stops blooming altogether.

Chrysanthemums are watered as needed, especially abundantly in June-July. Top dressing is applied once a month, mineral fertilizers or humus are used. To form a bush, the ends of the shoots are pinched. Curb varieties grow compactly without pinching.

Shrub varieties of small chrysanthemums

Shrub chrysanthemums look beautiful. Their bushes are compact, do not require supports. In the middle lane, Korean small-flowered chrysanthemums or oaks are most often grown. It winters well outdoors and has a long flowering period. Among the varieties, there are simple, double, curly and chamomile. The characteristics of some of them:

  • Grade “Bayram”. The diameter of the flower basket is 6 cm. The color is pink-purple. Blooms from July to late autumn. The aroma is specific. Chrysanthemum is disease resistant.
  • Variety “Anastasia”. Semi-double flowers, no more than 5 cm in diameter. Color from lemon to crimson. Changes as the bud opens.
  • Variety “Korean”. Baskets are terracotta-orange in color, no more than 4 cm in diameter. Blossom until late autumn.
  • Variety “Umka”. White chrysanthemum. When the baskets fade, they change their color to lilac.

In most small-flowered chrysanthemums, the diameter of the inflorescence does not exceed 4-6 cm. This is the norm.
