Gates founded many different companies, including Breakthrough Energy, a group of organizations that innovate for sustainable energy and emission reductions. And he discussed with the journalist the problem of greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture caused by the belching of cows.
Sky News notes that the belching of cows raised for slaughter releases a powerful greenhouse gas – methane. According to researchers from the Global Carbon Project, the amount of methane in the atmosphere increased sharply from 2000 to 2017, and this could lead to an increase in average temperatures by 4 ℃ by the end of the century.
According to Gates, solving the problem in animal husbandry is very difficult – and synthetic alternatives to protein may be needed at least for beef.
Gates believes that the world’s 80 poorest countries will continue to consume regular beef, but in middle- and higher-income countries, the transition to artificial is possible.
“I really believe that all rich countries should switch to 100% synthetic beef. You can get used to the difference in tastes, there are also claims that over time the taste will be even better, ”said Gates.
