The highest content of this heavy metal is found in the products of the well-known brands Cover Girl, L’Oreal and Christian Dior.
In total, 33 samples of red lipstick from different manufacturers were tested in the Santa Fe Spring laboratory in California. According to experts, in 61% of the studied samples, lead was detected in a concentration of 0 to 03 parts per million (ppm).
The fact is that in the United States there are no restrictions on the content of lead in lipstick. Therefore, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has taken the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines for candy as a basis. It turned out that about a third of the lipstick samples contained more than 0 ppm lead, which exceeded the maximum permissible concentration for candies. Lead was not detected in 1% of the samples.
Note that chronic lead intoxication causes syndromes of damage to the blood, nervous system, gastrointestinal tract and liver. Lead is especially dangerous for pregnant women and children. This metal causes infertility and miscarriage.
In connection with the results of the study, the authors urged manufacturers to reconsider the production technology of cosmetics, and to start producing lipsticks that do not contain lead.
In turn, members of the Association of Perfumes, Cosmetics and Personal Care Products said that lead is formed in cosmetics “naturally” and is not added during production.
