Interesting culinary trends 1979-2009

Previously, it was not accepted to spread about food trends, however, once every few years popular products or dishes appeared, mainly abroad, from which everyone went crazy with us. What did we miss when we were kids?

1979 – goat cheese

In 1979, goat cheese salad appeared in restaurants. It sounded and looked defiant, so it quickly became in demand. Moreover, all of a sudden they began to talk about the incredible benefits of this type of cheese – it has become a top position everywhere.

 

1980 – Ranch sauce

Rancha Sauce is a sour cream garlic dressing that can be added to salads and served with snacks. The inventor of the sauce is Steve Henson, who made the sauce at his American ranch and sold it to guests. By 1992, Ranch sauce had become the number one dressing in America and beyond.

1981 – Skittles

Skittles were first released in the UK, but quickly became popular in America and then around the world. Back then, these fruit dragees were positioned as rainbow-flavored candies, and they are still associated with a multi-colored mood.

1982 – creme brulee

The world-famous dessert creme brulee first appeared on the menu of New York’s Le Cirque restaurant. After that, all housewives tried to repeat it in their kitchens, with the taste of crème brulee they began to produce other sweets and drinks.

1983 – penne with vodka

This Italian dish can be found in many restaurants around the world today. It gained popularity in the 1980s at a New York restaurant called Joanna’s Restaurant. There are also legends about other places where the dish was born. Allegedly, the recipe for “penne with vodka” was invented in a restaurant in Bologna. Or that the dish was invented in the 1980s as an advertising campaign by a vodka manufacturer to distribute its product in Italy.

1985 – fajitas

In the United States, Mexican cuisine has been popular since the 70s. But in 1985, chef George Weidman of Germany included fajitas (a tortilla-wrapped grilled and striped meat and vegetables) on his menu at a Texas restaurant, after which the dish quickly spread around the world.

1986 – monkey bread

Monkey bread is a traditional American cupcake. It got its name from the resemblance to the cones of the tree, which the Americans call the “monkey puzzle”. Monkey bread was Nancy Reagan’s favorite pastry, who since 1985 has served cake not only on holidays, but also on ordinary days. In 1986, all the housewives began to prepare it for Thanksgiving.

1987 – chocolate truffles

Until a few decades ago, these sweets were considered an attribute of luxury. Until 1973, truffles were unknown in the United States. There, their taste was discovered by confectioner Alisa Medrich, who began to cook and sell sweets in her Cocolat chain of stores.

1988 – Lunchables

Lunchables are sealed ready meals. By 1988, they had filled supermarket shelves. Pizza, hot dogs, chips, crackers, deli meats and sweets for the kids were a handy snack to take with you.

1989 – vegetarian burgers

The first vegetarian burgers appeared in America in 1982, and by the 90s had become the most popular item on the menu in all burgers.

1990 – chocolate fondant

Muffins with liquid chocolate filling began to be made back in the 80s. At first, they didn’t get much public attention. In 1990, the chocolate fondant received a lot of mentions in the press, which attracted attention and began to be in great demand among gourmets.

1991 – Peanut Butter M & M’s

In 1991, M & M’s sweets became so popular that they demanded new flavors so as not to bore consumers. The creators decided that peanut butter is the very taste that will revive a new wave of success for colorful dragees.

1992 – Starbucks coffee

World famous Starbucks coffee shops gained their fame in 1992. They sold not just coffee, but hot drinks with different flavors and additives – everyone could find coffee to their liking. To date, nothing has changed.

Previously, dried fruits were not very popular, and for a long time only raisins were in the assortment on store shelves. In 1992, dried sweet cranberries appeared for the first time; they began to use it to prepare various dishes – snacks, desserts, dressings and toppings for breakfast porridge.

1994 Low Fat Food

In 1994, the fight against the obesity epidemic was declared in America, and low-fat foods became the most sought after food. In the US, Lean Cuisine was launched with lean meats and vegetables that just had to be heated in the microwave.

1995 – rice crisps

In 1995, Kellogg launched a new treat that won the hearts of children and adults alike. This glutinous crispy rice ball biscuit is easy to make and very unusual for those times in taste.

1996 – fried squid

Fried squid became such a popular snack in 1996 that it was mentioned 56 times in the New York Times in a year.

1998 – McFlurry ice cream from McDonald’s

In 1998, McDonald’s launched a dessert – ice cream with chocolate filling. It has become the most popular of all food at this fast food restaurant.

1999 – Cosmopolitan cocktail

After the premiere of Sex and the City in 1998, women around the world wanted to order Cosmopolitan from nearby bars. Carrie Bradshaw’s favorite drink began to appear on the cocktail lists of all establishments.

2000 – Smucker’s Uncrustables Sweet Sandwiches

In 200, Smucker’s Uncrustables mini-sandwiches were introduced – light cookies filled with peanut butter and fruit marmalade. It was convenient to take with you as a snack, and cookies like this are still in demand today.

2001 – Red Bull with vodka

Modern doctors do not recommend mixing alcohol and energy drinks. But in 2001, the Red Bull vodka duet was a hit with orders at the bar – it was tried by desperate daredevils.

2002 – smoothies

Fruit and berry smoothies are the most consumed breakfast this year. Easy to prepare, light and tasty, they began to be used for detox diets, sports diet nutrition and healing the body after a stormy party.

2003 – Lärabar Healthy Bar

Lärabar is one of the first healthy bars made with dried fruits, nuts and seeds. In 2003, Lara Merikken invented a bar that does not harm the teeth and figure. This phenomenon has become a real revolution in the culture of proper nutrition.

2004 – yogurt

In 2004, yogurt became a recommended product in any of the popular diets for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. The emphasis was placed on the health benefits of this product for the stomach and intestines.

2005 – cupcakes

In 2005, cupcakes were sold first in chain coffee shops, and then everywhere. It was the most bought takeaway dessert. A lot of homemade desserts have appeared.

2006 – white chocolate mocha

By 2006, drinks that included chocolate had become even more popular. White chocolate mocha is everywhere.

2007 – frozen yogurt

In 2005, Pinkberry (frozen dessert restaurants) opened their first store. The demand for frozen yoghurts has grown steadily. In 2007, it became fashionable to buy frozen yoghurt for a snack and refreshment.

2008 – ramen

In 2008, Momofuku Noodle Bar in New York introduced a Japanese dish with wheat noodles ramen to its menu. Visitors loved the new product and quickly became a fast food trend. At the same time, the first Ippudo opened in America – establishments of the Japanese chain of ramen restaurants.

2009 – bacon

In 2009, bacon became a trending ingredient. It was popularized by films and TV shows, where the heroes now and then added fried bacon to the dishes. Until 2009, bacon consumption increased by 40%.
