If the shrimp smells like ammonia

Reading time – 3 minutes.

The ammonia smell from shrimp is a clear sign of spoiled food. It is released when microbes act on seafood. In addition, some manufacturers use this substance to treat the product, thus extending the shelf life. It is even worse when ammonia is injected into the body of live shrimp as a supplement or medicine. This not only impairs the taste of the product, but also makes it dangerous for consumers. If the storage conditions are violated, an unpleasant smell of ammonia may also appear.

You can do without consequences with a low ammonia content in the product. But it is still better to get rid of such shrimp. Indeed, without laboratory testing, it is impossible to determine the amount of harmful substances in them. The ingestion of ammonia into the body can lead to poisoning, internal bleeding and death.
