To begin with, you should understand that, like any other seasoning, bay leaves have an expiration date, which is indicated on the package. If the package is not opened – bay leaves can be stored for a year, if you open the pack – then it should be used as soon as possible. Nothing will happen to the bay leaf after the expiration date, but it will practically not affect the taste of the dishes.

For bay leaves, factors such as daylight, humidity, warmth and lack of ventilated air, spices in the neighborhood, which the bay leaves easily absorb, are not welcomed. It is not recommended to store bay leaves in such conditions.

It will be ideal if you start storing bay leaves in a glass hermetically sealed container, in a dry and dark place. It can also be stored in the door of the refrigerator or cupboard, in a tightly closed cabinet drawer. If your condiment shelf is open, change the glass container to an opaque one.

Remove bay leaves from the container with clean, dry hands.

If you’ve got a fresh laurel, check it for damage and dust. Then rinse the leaves with cold water and dry by collecting the leaves in bunches and hanging them in the air or spreading them on the fabric in a thin layer. Then it is recommended to collect the leaves, seal them tightly and send them to the freezer.
