Dumbo rat: features of the species

This breed got its name in honor of the little funny elephant Dumbo from the Disney cartoon of the same name. Indeed, there is something in common with the painted elephant in the dumbo rat.

A distinctive feature of this breed is the very large ears, located below normal. This arrangement makes the little rat’s face funny and memorable. Please note that the more ears the baby has, the more valuable it is considered.

Interestingly, the Dumbo breed is the youngest. It was taken out in America just 15 years ago.

There is also such a species as the dumbo rex rat. It has a curly and rough to the touch fur. This is the breed of rats captured in the famous children’s cartoon “Ratatouille”.

Let’s figure out all the nuances of keeping a dumbo rat at home.

  • House. A metal cage is best suited as a home. The rat will chew through a plastic cage very easily, and it will be inconvenient to look after a glass aquarium. The cage must be spacious enough. The minimum size is 60 × 40 × 30.
  • Climate. Dumbo does not tolerate drafts and immediately catches a cold. Also, this breed does not like constant exposure to direct sunlight and too dry air. The ideal temperature for a pet is -18-21 ° C.
  • Diet. Dumbo are practically omnivorous. However, a number of vegetables cannot be given to them. These vegetables include raw potatoes, beans, Brussels sprouts and cabbage, radishes, turnips, spinach, cucumbers. Naturally, you cannot give sweets to babies (chocolate, candies, etc.). When choosing rat cheese, avoid moldy varieties. Give seeds to your baby rarely, just as a treat.

Dumbo loves to gnaw on everything, so he needs an eye and an eye. Having broken through to freedom, the baby immediately pounces on indoor plants. It is very important to make sure that he does not eat the poisonous flower.

It remains to find the answer to the last question: how long do dumbo rats live? The average life expectancy of these babies is 2-3 years. But if you very strictly follow all the rules of care described above, the rat can become a real long-liver and live up to 5 years.
