Canteen: our advice to make things go well

Do I have to register my child for the canteen? A dilemma for some parents, who feel guilty about leaving their toddler all day at school. But when you work, you often have no other choice. In fact, the canteen is beneficial for small students. Update with the psychoanalyst Nicole Fabre who guides you to better experience the situation …

Some parents have a hard time leaving their child in the canteen. What advice would you give them to overcome this feeling?

First of all, you have to admit that registering your child in the canteen is not a fault. Parents must tell themselves that they cannot do otherwise and above all that they are doing their best in “this otherwise”. It is also important to prepare the child for the idea of the canteen by explaining that many students also stay there. Above all, it should not be put in front of a fait accompli. And the less the parents feel guilty the more they will be able to present this step in a natural way to their child.

What if the little ones eat very little in the canteen because they don’t like the place or the dishes on offer?

As long as parents leave their child in the canteen, it is preferable that they keep a certain distance. Of course, we can ask the child if he has eaten well, but if he answers no, we must not dramatize. “Ah, well, you haven’t eaten, too bad for you”, “it’s very good, however.” The worst thing would be to get into this game by giving it, for example, a snack for recess.

What benefits can children get from the canteen?

There are several advantages to the canteen. School restaurants provide a setting for children. In some families, everyone eats on their own or feeds as they wish, in a whimsical way. The canteen reminds children that there is an hour to eat. The pupils must also have a certain outfit, remain seated, wait their turn … The canteen is also beneficial for the sociability of the little ones since they have lunch in groups, with their friends. The only downside to some school restaurants is the noise. It can sometimes “terrorize” the youngest. But this is a point that parents must admit …

Some municipalities allow parents without a professional activity to register their child in the canteen, one or more days a week. Would you advise them to take advantage of this opportunity?

When the kids can stay with their families, that’s great. However, it may be beneficial for the little one to eat occasionally or regularly in the canteen. This allows him to familiarize himself with this place. He will also be better prepared if his parents are brought in later to leave him in the canteen every day. Eating once a week at school, for example, also gives the child a set of benchmarks and rhythm. And parents can give themselves a little more freedom on this day. It is therefore favorable for young and old.
