Condom: all you need to know to make love without danger

The condom, whether male or female, is the only protection that both protects against STIs and STDs, and serves as a method of contraception. What are the dangers of having sex without a condom?

Male condom: all you need to know about its use

The male condom is the most widely used model of condom. Made of latex, it consists of a flexible sheath that fits over the erect penis, impermeable to blood, semen or vaginal fluids. This method of contraception and protection is for single use: the condom must be tied and discarded after use. Condoms should be stored in a dry place protected from light. It is also imperative to check the expiration date of a condom before use, which is indicated on the packaging. When using, be careful when inserting the condom: you must first blow to draw air, and pay attention to nails or jewelry so as not to tear it. Finally, to facilitate use, it may be recommended to use a lubricant, preferably non-greasy (water-based), which is also found in supermarkets or in pharmacies.

Focus on the female condom

Although less known to the general public, the condom is also available in a female version. Sold in pharmacies, the female condom is a kind of sheath, decorated with flexible rings at each of its two ends. The smaller ring is used to insert the condom and keep it inside the vagina. The larger one is used to cover the external genitals once in place. It is inserted manually inside the vagina, while lying down or sitting. It is made of polyurethane, a very thin and resistant material. As with the male condom, it is disposable, and protects against both illnesses and pregnancy. The main advantage of the female condom is that it can be placed in the vagina before sex begins, several hours beforehand. Finally, be aware that the latter is sold already lubricated, to facilitate its insertion, and that it is known to be more resistant than the male condom.

The condom, the only protection against STIs and STDs

The condom is the one and only reliable way to protect yourself against sexually transmitted diseases and infections. This is valid for vaginal or anal penetration, as well as for oral sex. If you are not completely sure about your partner’s status regarding their testing, use a condom when having sex. Not using it amounts to putting yourself in danger and exposing yourself to the risk of transmitting viruses such as AIDS or infections such as herpes or syphilis. It should be noted that the condom is also to be used during foreplay, such as during oral sex for example. Indeed, it is possible to transmit viruses even during these practices, since there may be contact with semen and / or other fluids that transmit diseases.

The condom as a method of contraception

The condom, whether female or male, also helps protect against a desired pregnancy. This method of contraception is easy to use and does not involve one of the two partners on a daily basis. Indeed, unlike the pill for example, it does not involve any hormone intake and has no effect on the body. If you are not in a relationship and / or have several sexual partners at the same time, the condom is the best way to protect yourself and have safe contraception. In addition, the condom can be bought very easily and does not require a medical prescription, so you can always carry it with you.

Where and how to choose a condom?

Condoms are on sale in supermarkets and in pharmacies. It is also possible to obtain it free of charge in awareness-raising associations, in screening centers for STDs and STIs, as well as in family planning centers. The infirmary of schools also distributes it. It is imperative to choose the right size condom to be perfectly protected. Indeed, a condom that is too large may be uncomfortable, and especially crack. For people who are allergic to latex, there are also condoms that do not contain it. Finally, be aware that there are also condoms that are out of the ordinary (colored, phosphorescent, scented, etc.), or coated with a slightly anesthetic product, which can spice up your relationship while being perfectly protected!
