Concealer: which one to choose? How to apply it?

Nothing worse than dark circles to fill a face and make you look tired. Some women are more prone to it than others, even after 8-hour nights and a healthy lifestyle! Fortunately, there are very good products to hide them, but you still have to choose them well and apply them well. Manual !

Why do we have dark circles?

From dark brown to purplish through bluish, more or less hollowed out, the rings give us the air of a panda that we would gladly do without.

This hyperpigmentation of the skin located just under the eyes is mainly linked to poor blood circulation, as well as to lymphatic tissue dysregulation. And as the epidermis is, in this place, almost 4 times thinner than on the rest of the body, the pigments are more visible there.

The brown circles are essentially attributable to an excess of pigments, and the blue-purplish ones to a visible vascularization.

Among the different causes of the appearance of dark circles, we can mention:

  • tiredness ;
  • the stress ;
  • allergies ;
  • hereditary factors;
  • or a hormonal imbalance caused by pregnancy or menopause.

What is a concealer?

The concealer is one of the essentials of the makeup bag. It belongs to the family of complexion correctors, and beyond its interest in camouflaging dark circles, it is very useful for masking small imperfections of all kinds.

Used well, it illuminates the eyes, erases signs of fatigue and unites the complexion. But if most concealers are content to hide the hyper-pigmentation of the skin, there are more effective products that are also real care. These concealer treatments improve blood circulation and reactivate cell regeneration.

The different types of concealer

There are several types of concealer packaging depending on their texture and coverage.

The tubes

Tube concealers often have a fairly fluid texture. Light to covering, they generally allow a quite natural rendering. Their tip can be foam or plastic.

Sticks or pencils

Often drier and more compact in texture, they are generally quite covering and matt. However, sticks can vary a lot depending on the brand and model.

The pens

They come in the form of a cylindrical tube with an integrated brush cap. Generally fluid in texture, their coverage is rather light. They are well suited to light dark circles and their format lends itself perfectly to small touch-ups during the day.

The pots

Rich and creamy in texture, pot concealers are generally rich in pigments and provide good coverage for very dark circles. However, be careful with products with a too thick texture which – poorly applied – can accentuate fine lines under the eyes.

How to choose the right color?

The choice of the color of the concealer is essential for a natural and successful result.

The absolute rule is to always opt for a concealer that is slightly lighter than your skin tone. We therefore do not hesitate to compare the shade of the concealer to that of its foundation or tinted cream: they should ideally be a half tone apart.

The purpose of the concealer is to lighten the dark area to refresh the eyes.

Very pigmented dark circles that tend to blue or purple, can be neutralized using a tinted base, of a complementary color. Brown, black or brown circles will be well corrected by an orange, apricot or peach concealer. The bluish, can opt for a pink product, insofar as the red neutralizes the blue. For pink or purplish circles, opt instead on a beige concealer with yellow pigments opposed to purple.

When and how to apply your concealer?

Before applying any makeup, make sure that the skin is clean, therefore cleansed beforehand, and well hydrated. The more the skin is hydrated, the more the finish will be velvety and natural: we do not hesitate to apply an eye contour treatment to smooth the thin skin of the lower eyelid.

“Before or after the foundation? Is the question that everyone is asking and which divides the crowds. But it is well after the foundation that it is recommended to apply its concealer so as not to risk covering it and altering its illuminating effect with the foundation.

How to properly apply your concealer?

The concealer is deposited with the finger or with an applicator, in the inner corner of the eye, at the level of the lower eyelid. Be careful to take a small amount of product to avoid the plaster effect, which could weigh down the look and give the opposite of the expected effect. We continue the application by stippling along the ring (without touching the roots of the eyelashes) and we draw an inverted triangle whose tip is located in the middle and at the top of the cheek. Note that the concealer does not stretch, but patches gently. You can do this with your finger, the foam applicator or an egg-shaped makeup sponge. To brighten the eyes, you can add three additional touches of concealer: one between the two eyes, and two more just below the browbone.
