Catching burbot in the summer is a useless undertaking, it does not tolerate heat, therefore it hides in the depths and it is rather problematic to lure it out of there. But when the air and water temperature drops, he will boldly scour the shallows in search of food. The best delicacies for a river dweller are:
- small crustaceans;
- shellfish;
- small fish.
All these gastronomic preferences are familiar to fishermen, these options are considered the best bait when catching burbot on small rivers and lakes. In the north, a water worm is used as a delicacy to catch a representative of cod, it is pre-washed and put on a hook in bunches.
Where does burbot live
Before you prepare tackle for burbot, you should find out where to look for it. Experienced anglers are advised to navigate by such features of the river, which will definitely appeal to the representative of cod:
- rocky bottom, without sharp drops in the daytime;
- sandy sections of the river and rifts at night.
Burbot mainly prefers the near-bottom parts of the reservoir, which is why it is caught on bottom gear.
How to catch burbot
Catching burbot in autumn on the river can take place in several ways, everyone chooses the most suitable type for himself. It will be important to properly equip with high-quality components so as not to miss the trophy catch. On Vyatka, on the Klyazma and on the Neva, experienced fishermen use different gear to catch a cod representative. If the biting of the burbot is good, then no matter what tackle is used, it is better in this case to worry about bait and feeding the place.
The most common equipment for catching aquatic inhabitants are recognized:
- bottom tackle;
- spinning;
- zherlitsy.
Each of them can bring a good catch, but large burbot, as practice shows, is best taken on donks and snacks.
The freshwater representative of the cod is not distinguished by caution, therefore, less delicate components can be used for equipment than for other river inhabitants.
Donka and spinning are used from the shore, but you will have to place the vents from the boat. But in the autumn, it is the first two options for equipment that work best.
Tackle elements
Given the habitat of burbot and knowing its habits, you can understand that you can safely use a monk or a thicker cord, the hooks are also chosen not small, which are suitable for both live bait and a bunch of worms.
Rod

You should not use a line to form leads, it is coarser than fishing line and will not allow the live bait to move actively.
Hooks for burbot

- necessarily the presence of a long forearm;
- preference is given to products with thick wire;
- sharpness must be excellent.
It’s hard to tell the size, it all depends on the bait used. For a bunch of worms, 9-10 numbers according to the domestic classification are enough. For shrimp and small gudgeon, you will need a size 8 live bait double. The same options are used to equip the vents.
Catching burbot on the Yenisei will require the use of larger hooks, they must be selected for bait.
It is better to use products with serifs on the back of the forearm, then the bait will not slip off the hook.
Zherlitsy
The equipment of the vents is carried out with a fishing line, the thickness of which should be at least 0,3 mm, it is not wound around a circle much, 10 meters will be enough. This is followed by a leash, it is better to use steel, it is stronger and can withstand jerks and other predators.

Feeder
The best bait for catching burbot with a feeder is a worm, in addition, the bait in the feeder will be an important point, without it fishing will not work out. Catching burbot on a feeder is carried out with the obligatory use of food, but purchased mixtures will not help to lure a predator. Fishermen on the Neva and Klyazma use a home-made version, which is prepared right on the shore. To make it work you need:
- a small number of small minnows, ruffs or other small fish;
- several worms, which will then be used as bait;
- soil from a reservoir, preferably with clay and sand.
Fish and worms are cut into small pieces, mixed with soil into a strong lump. The resulting mixture is stuffed into a feeder without a bottom or thrown without it into the place where the hook is located.
Donka
Donka for burbot involves the use of animal baits, most often fishing is carried out on live bait. Catching burbot on the Oka in autumn is effective for shrimp, which is pre-boiled. A good option would be worms, bloodworms and maggots are unlikely to be able to attract the attention of a cod representative.
The burbot will never rise for the proposed bait in the water, so the spinners are retrieved slowly, without sharp jerks.
We collect tackle

When and how to catch burbot in water bodies?
Depending on the chosen method of catching burbot, fishing is mostly carried out from the coastline. The time for fishing for different methods will vary, but the places are the same.
Spinning
Fishing of the water area is carried out after sunset, but before dark, so that sluggish traces of detection can be seen. The ideal places are shallows with a sandy bottom and shallow depths with small pebbles close to the shore.
Zakidushka
Casting gear is carried out at about the same time, while it will stand until the morning. Usually several rods are used at once, which are cast at different distances relative to the shore. So you can capture a large area for fishing, thereby increasing the chances of a trophy copy.
Feeder
Fishing with a feeder is carried out in the same way as with a bait, only before casting, freshly prepared bait is stuffed into the feeder. Periodically it is necessary to check the presence of food in the feeder and stuff again to attract the attention of the fish.
It is necessary to increase the amount of feed when the bites are weakened, in this way the interest of the burbot in the bait will increase.
If within an hour after casting the tackle there was not a single bite and the bait on the hooks was not touched, it is worth changing the chosen fishing place.
Burbot fishing on the Irtysh in autumn is also carried out with vertical lures, which are most often used for winter fishing. The best option would be pilkers, elongated with cut ends. The lure is carried out with side rods from the boat, while the equipment is completely identical to the spinning rod, only the rod is taken shorter.
Fishing for burbot does not stop in winter, it is successfully fished in the first ice until mid-December, when spawning begins at the cod representative. Until February, burbot becomes lethargic, almost does not respond to the proposed baits.
In spring, when air and water temperatures rise, burbot goes to deep holes and does not leave them until mid-autumn.
Burbot is caught only in the cool season, it does not tolerate warm water. To catch a decent variant, it is preferable to catch burbot at night; during the daytime, this predator rests in a secluded place.
