The condition of the fetus in the 7th month of pregnancy

Baby’s weight at the start of 7 months of pregnancy (29 SA) is 1 kg. Its size is 32 cm.

His pulmonary system continues to mature. At the cerebral level, the myelination of the nerves takes place: the myelin sheaths all the nerve fibers. This process will continue for several years after birth. The liver, intestines and kidneys are now independent and effectively process the amniotic fluid that the baby keeps swallowing. Thus, the baby shapes its taste, with a clear preference already for sweetness, studies have shown (1).

The development of the sexual organs continues: in boys, the testes descend into the bursae, while in girls, the stock of oocytes is built up.

In the 7th month of pregnancy, although still in his mother’s womb, the baby awakens to the world through all of his senses. He perceives the noises, the voices, and even the emotions of his mother. His eyes are finished and he can now open them. If he cannot see strictly speaking, as the functions of his brain develop, he becomes sensitive to the alternation of light and shadow.

At 7 months pregnant, either 29 to 32 weeks of amenorrhea (SA), it grows and grows rapidly, and thanks to the adipose tissue that forms under the skin, its appearance is less and less wrinkled. The lanugo, this thin down that until then covered his body, disappears except for the shoulders and back.

At the end of this 7th month of pregnancy, the baby is 38 cm tall and weighs 1,5 kg.

Changes in a mother who is 7 months pregnant

The uterus has grown again and goes up towards the diaphragm, which accentuates the acid reflux, shortness of breath, the feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen.

Weight gain is significant, averaging 400g per week. One part directly benefits the baby, another (around 40%) constitutes the fat reserves for breastfeeding.

The feeling of heaviness felt in the lower abdomen at 7 months of pregnancy is normal. So-called Braxton Hicks contractions can be felt by the expectant mother. They are benign and are used to prepare the expulsion of the baby on the day of delivery. The uterus contracts since the beginning of pregnancy, as if to exercise. Only, at the beginning of pregnancy, they are imperceptible. Localized and painless contractions should not be confused with real contractions, which are becoming more frequent and painful. The real contractions mark the beginning of labor and the belly hardens in its entirety. In the 7th month of pregnancy, contractions by the kidneys or in the belly, making the pregnant woman suffer, must be the subject of a medical consultation. Finally, in case of doubt, the mother-to-be should not hesitate to call the maternity unit in which she is registered. Health professionals will know how to guide and reassure her.
