4 tips to remember to protect your intestinal flora
The intestinal flora refers to all the bacteria that are found naturally in our intestines. The presence of these bacteria is not of infectious origin but, on the contrary, helps prevent infections. Our body can be attacked by bacteria which are pathogenic, often linked to our diet, to taking medication or to our mental state (anxiety). Too much presence of these pathogenic bacteria creates an imbalance in the intestinal flora. It is the cause of many viral infections and digestive disorders. In order to strengthen its immune system and preserve its intestinal flora, PasseportSanté invites you to discover its 4 key tips!

Let’s talk about probiotics to protect your intestinal flora!

As you probably know, the intestine is the longest organ after the skin, it measures around 6m. The intestinal flora actively participates in strengthening our immune system: it is therefore essential to take care of it.

Probiotics are microorganisms found in the intestinal flora. These are “good bacteria” in charge of controlling the production of immune cells, which will navigate throughout the body, especially up to the respiratory system. Probiotics also fight against the increase in pathogenic bacteria (= which can cause disease) and prevent viral infections. Probiotics also aid in the digestion of certain foods.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines probiotics as “living bacteria which, when consumed regularly and in sufficient quantities, have a potentially beneficial effect on health”. According to an article published by Inserm1 , taking probiotics in children such as lactobacilli, bifidobacteria and certain streptococci would decrease episodes of gastroenteritis.

Probiotics: who are they?

The probiotics naturally present in our body contribute to the microbial balance of our intestinal flora. There are a multitude of species of probiotics that have a very specific effect on health.

Some studies have shown that certain probiotics, for example, have an activity of separating bile salts (= partly derived from cholesterol), participating in the lowering of the level of total cholesterol. There are others, such as lactobacillus which is present in fermented yogurts (= yogurt) and in certain food supplements. Research has shown the preventive and therapeutic action of lactobacillus on urinary tract infections or diarrhea. In the bifidobacteria family, bifidobacterium facilitate transit and promote glucose tolerance. As for active brewer’s yeast, it is a probiotic that acts on the epidermis, the hair mass or the nails.

Probiotics do not have the same effects in everyone. The active capacity of the probiotic is not enough. It is important to know more about your body and get closer to your doctor.

The use of probiotics is controversial. Some research shows the possible link between probiotics and obesity. According to an article published on Inserm2, ” administration of lactobacillus acidophilus is associated with significant weight gain in humans and animals.»
