Work from home

Benefits of teleworking for the worker

The advantages of teleworking were highlighted by a meta-analysis by researchers Gajendran and Harrison, identifying 46 studies and covering 12 employees.

  • Greater autonomy
  • Saves time
  • Freedom to organize
  • Reduction of time spent in transport
  • Reduction of fatigue
  • Reduction of costs related to commuting
  • Better concentration
  • Productivity gain
  • Diffusion of new technologies
  • Decreased absenteeism
  • Enchantment of work
  • Possibility of making an appointment during the day (reduction of stress relating to the management of multiple roles)

Most teleworkers consider that the distribution of different social times (professional, family, personal) has improved and that the time spent with their loved ones is longer.

Disadvantages of telework for the worker

Of course, embarking on remote work is not without risks for those who try the experiment. Here is a list of the main disadvantages of working from home:

  • Risk of social isolation
  • Risk of family conflicts
  • Risk of addictions at work
  • Risk of losing opportunities for advancement
  • Difficulty separating professional and private life
  • Loss of team spirit
  • Difficulties in personal organization
  • Complexity in measuring actual working time
  • Blurring of borders
  • Loss of spatio-temporal notion
  • Interference, interruptions, and rapid intrusions leading to disruption of tasks, loss of concentration
  • Inability to separate or distance oneself from work due to the equipment present at home
  • Negative effects on the employee’s sense of belonging to the collective
  • Negative effects on the collective’s marks of recognition towards the worker

Relationship between telework and life balance

The generalization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the ever-increasing demands for availability are leading to an invasion of work in personal life. This phenomenon would be even more marked in the case of teleworking. There is a great temptation to be always connected and to stay in touch with the professional environment 24 hours a day to manage the unforeseen and the urgent. Of course, this would have adverse effects on the health, physical and mental of teleworkers.

To cope with this, the establishment of a clear boundary between professional and private life is essential. Without this, teleworking from home seems impossible and unthinkable. For this, anyone who decides to work remotely must:

  • define a specific space for working at home;
  • establish morning rituals at home to mark the work day (for example, dress as in the office), set standards, benchmarks, start and end rules;
  • inform his children and friends that he works from home and that he cannot be disturbed during working hours. Because of his presence at home, their family has very high expectations of him and it often happens that the worker complains that family members do not perceive him as working.

For researcher Tremblay and his team, “ the members of the entourage do not always understand the limits of the teleworker and allow themselves to formulate requests for availability that they would not formulate if the person did not work at home ». And conversely, ” for those around them, parents, friends, seeing the teleworker working a few hours on weekends can encourage them to say that he is still working ».
