Which potatoes are best stored in winter

Reading time – 3 minutes.

How the potatoes overwinter and whether it will be possible to preserve the harvest until spring depends on the agrotechnical properties of the variety, and not on the color of the peel. Varieties that have a high keeping quality and have proven themselves well during winter storage – red “Red Scarlett”, yellow “Divo”, white “Valentina”.

It is recommended to sort out potatoes of any kind before laying for the winter, sorting them by size and suitability. Choosing for storage is medium-sized tubers that weigh about 100 g. Larger ones will not be stored for a long time due to strong evaporation of moisture – it is better to cook them during the first weeks of storage. Green potatoes are not suitable – the harmful substance solanine accumulates in them due to a long exposure to the light. They should not be eaten by either humans or animals. Potatoes with holes, damaged skin or affected by late blight are also unsuitable for storage. They will not only spoil themselves, but also lead to spoilage of other tubers lying nearby.
