What water to drink during pregnancy?

Pregnant, drink water at will

Pregnant, our water needs remain the same. Our daily consumption should approach a liter and a half, or even two liters, and be compensated for in the event of fever, hot weather, etc.

« These contributions must be distributed as follows: one liter in the form of a drink and 500 ml in the form of food ‘, advises Jean-Michel Lecerf, head of the nutrition department at the Institut Pasteur de Lille.

Bottled or tap water

Water can be consumed in several forms. Of course, there are the ones that everyone is familiar with: bottled or straight out of your tap.

Tap water, contrary to popular belief, is perhaps the best of all! ” It undergoes more checks than any other product. Its pollutant content is almost zero », Reassures Jean-Michel Lecerf, nutritionist. It can therefore be consumed without worry during your pregnancy. To check the quality of its tap water, go to the government website.

Bottled water. In the “water” department, we no longer know where to look and for good reason: the brands each highlight the strengths of their product (“rich in this, rich in that…”). To benefit from all the nutrients on offer, you have to vary! Some, like Hepar, contain a high amount of magnesium, which helps fight fatigue. Several studies have also shown that it facilitates childbirth, helping the uterus to relax. Contrex and Vittel are richer in calcium. Others, like Badoit (sparkling), are renowned for their high fluorine content. This is known to participate in oral protection. Good thing: a lot of pregnant women suffer from gum problems!

Beware, on the other hand, of flavored waters. Very sweet, they will not help you keep a top silhouette. Do you like it when it sparkles? During pregnancy, continue to indulge yourself! Sparkling water is absolutely not recommended. It is only to be avoided if you suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease or bloating, since it promotes them.

Eat fruit!

Fruits and vegetables also “count” like water, since they contain between 80 and 90%. In other words, eating 600 g per day is like drinking about 500 ml of water!

Fruits and vegetables that contain the most water: citrus fruits (rich in vitamin C, they keep you in shape during pregnancy!), But also green salad, cabbage, leeks, tomatoes …

Those that contain the least: potatoes, carrots, peas …

Think about soup and herbal tea

Soup, milk or herbal tea, that also counts! The soup provides many nutrients, such as magnesium or potassium, both of which contribute to good neuromuscular function and good blood pressure regulation.

Tea or coffee: stay reasonable!

As for the “little black”, it is not contraindicated during pregnancy. However, it is safer not to exceed two cups per day. Beyond that, you increase the risk of insomnia and your heart may also start to beat faster.

Tea consumption is less problematic than that of coffee, except for those who drink really a lot of it: tea can interfere with the assimilation of iron by the body!

The benefits of water on our little ailments

Constipation. It is not uncommon for pregnant women to have to deal with capricious transit! Drinking remains an effective way to fight against it. As Dr Lecerf reminds us: “the water will promote the action of the fibers. A lack of hydration will produce the opposite effect ”.

Dry skin. During pregnancy, the skin is influenced by hormones. Some pregnant women find the oily skin of their adolescence, others, on the contrary, feel their skin dry out. The best beauty gesture to keep the skin soft: drink as much as you want! ” Water is more effective than any moisturizer », Underlines the nutritionist.

Cramps. Hydrating will also be good for our muscles. Cramps are often due to a loss of mineral salts. We therefore choose waters rich in calcium, sodium or potassium. No more contractures that paralyze us anywhere and anytime!
