Parent of student delegate: what is it for?
These delegate parents, whom you elect, will represent you on the School Council. Let us understand clearly: they are not going to go and plead your daughter’s cause to her institute so that she is exempt from the gym or that she is no longer sitting at the back of the class (that would be up to you. do it by making an appointment with the teacher). Corn they take over from parents near the director and teaching staff to address at each School Council (there are 3 per year) all questions of an educational nature, or that affect school life: integration of disabled children, school catering, child safety … They can also propose a organization of school time or animation project (organization of a reading workshop, etc.). The elected parents are full school council members and have a deliberative voice during each council.
What does the School Council do?
The School Council meets 3 times a year. Its role is to:
– vote on the school’s internal regulations
– adopt the school project
– give its opinion and make suggestions on the functioning of the school and on all questions concerning the life of the school: integration of disabled children, school catering, school hygiene, child safety, etc.
– agree to the organization of complementary, educational, sporting or cultural activities
– he can propose a project for the organization of non-conforming school time.

Who votes in the elections of parents of pupils?
Each parent of a child, regardless of their marital status, is a voter and eligible. Which means that there will be two of you to vote!
There are as many parents’ representatives on the school council as there are classes in the school. The lists can be presented by an association affiliated to a national federation (PEEP, FCPE or UNAAPE…), or by parents of students who have created their own list or local association. Only obligation: have a child enrolled in school where we present ourselves, of course!

What if I want to participate?
School lists to sit on the School Council are generally closed at the end of September. You can also join parents’ associations, because goodwill is always welcomed with open arms (especially for the organization of the end of year fair!) and you will already have your footing in the stirrup for next year!

- How to vote?
Parents cast their vote at the polling station of the school attended by their child or vote by post.
- Who is a voter?
Each of the two parents is a voter, whatever his marital status or nationality, except in the case where he has had parental authority withdrawn.
When a third party is responsible for the education of the child, he has the right to vote and to be a candidate in these elections in place of the parents. Each voter is eligible.
- What voting method?
The election takes place at list system with proportional representation to the highest remainder. The substitutes are elected after the incumbents, in the order of presentation of the candidates on the list.
- In schools
There are as many parents’ representatives on the school council as there are classes in the school. This represents around 248 parents’ representatives for all nursery and elementary schools in France.
