Vitamin B13

Vitamin B13 (orotic acid) is isolated from whey (in Greek “oros” – colostrum). Takes part in the synthesis of nucleic acids, phospholipids and bilirubin.

The need for vitamin B13 increases with:

  • increased physical activity;
  • during the recovery period after various diseases.

Digestibility

Orotic acid is often prescribed to improve the tolerability of drugs: antibiotics, sulfonamides, resoquin, delagil, steroid hormones.

Useful properties and its effect on the body

Orotic acid activates hematopoiesis, both red blood (erythrocytes) and white (leukocytes). It has a stimulating effect on protein synthesis, has a beneficial effect on the functional state of the liver, improves liver function, takes part in the conversion of folic and pantothenic acids, the synthesis of the essential amino acid methionine.

Orotic acid has a positive effect in the treatment of liver and heart diseases. There is evidence that it increases fertility and improves fetal development.

Orotic acid has anabolic properties as it stimulates protein synthesis, cell division, growth and development of the body, normalizes liver function, contributing to the regeneration of hepatocytes, accelerates the regeneration of liver cells, and reduces the risk of developing fatty liver.

It is effective in the treatment of skin diseases in children, helps to reduce the risk of anemia and even prevents premature aging.

Lack and excess of vitamin

Signs of a vitamin B13 deficiency

Cases of insufficiency have not been described, since orotic acid is synthesized by the body in sufficient quantities. In some cases (with serious injuries or in adolescence), drugs containing orotic acid are prescribed due to an increased need for it.

Signs of excess “vitamin” B13

In some cases, when taking additional portions of orotic acid, allergic dermatoses are observed, which quickly pass after the drug is discontinued.

The drug in high doses can cause liver dystrophy with a low-protein diet, dyspeptic symptoms are possible.
