Why does the vagina hurt? What could be causing the pain? Are there any over-the-counter medications at the pharmacy that would help eliminate vaginal pain? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

What can vaginal pain mean?

Hello, my problem is very intimate and it was hard for me to go about asking this question at all. He has been teasing me for some time vaginal pain. The pain increases during intercourse, so I don’t enjoy intimate relationships with my partner anymore. What could be causing vaginal pain?

I will mention that he does not bother me excessive vaginal burningand the mucus is no different than usual. Sometimes vaginal pain is accompanied by lower abdominal pain, but this is not a common symptom. I also don’t pressure on the bladder. I have an appointment with the gynecologist in about a month, but I would not like to wait that long with a diagnosis. Maybe I could buy over-the-counter medications to help with vaginal pain. I don’t know what to do or who to ask anymore. I am ashamed to go to the internist, because what will help me? Usually they send back with a receipt, so now they will probably send it back as well, because vaginal problems are a typical problem for a gynecologist.

I didn’t tell my partner anything. Since the vaginal pain increases, I basically avoid close-ups and intercourse. I am asking for advice on what may be the cause of vaginal pain.

Your doctor advises what may be causing your vaginal pain

Dear lady, unfortunately the very term vaginal pain is quite a general statement, therefore there can be many reasons. The most common cause is, of course, infections which, apart from vaginal pain, are manifested by itching, abundant discharge, abdominal pain and urge to urinate. Based on your description, this cause can be initially rejected, but of course only a gynecologist, after a thorough examination, will be able to confirm or rule out the infection.

In addition to infections, vaginal tumors can also cause pain. I would like to warn you right away that malignant tumors are much less common than benign ones and more common in elderly women. Therefore, please don’t worry. The most common benign neoplasms are fibroids, which, when enlarged, can cause more and more pain. Apart from fibromas, one should also consider cysts, polyps and genital warts – growths resulting from HPV infection.

In the case of malignant neoplasms, squamous cell carcinoma is the most common, followed by adenocarcinoma. Apart from vaginal pain the patients also complain of blood-discolored vaginal discharge, unpleasant smell and pain during defecation. Of course, without proper examinations, including specula examinations, it is impossible to diagnose vaginal cancer. The much rarer causes of vaginal pain are congenital defects of the vagina, but we expect this diagnosis mainly in very young women who have just started intercourse.

Do congenital defects of the vagina causing severe pain include vaginal septum, longitudinal and transverse. As you noticed, the reasons may be different, but without a gynecological examination it is impossible to make a specific diagnosis. If the symptoms are so bothersome that you are unable to withstand the visit to the gynecologist, please consider a private visit. The medications that I can suggest are painkillers, such as ibuprofen or metamizole, and antispasmodics.
