Not everyone has had time to remove the Christmas tree yet, but everyone around is already preparing for Valentine’s Day. Advertising on the Internet promises special offers: candlelit dinners, romantic trips for two, red heart-shaped balloons. But what about women without a partner? Shut up at home and sob into your pillow? We offer to forget about tears and self-pity and do something more interesting.

Sitting on the couch, watching romantic comedies, overeating on chocolate and feeling sorry for yourself is not the worst, but not the best option either. Just because you are alone is not a reason to be depressed. Is it really necessary to have a partner to celebrate a holiday? You can, for example:

1. Pamper the kids

Don’t waste your money on tasteless gifts, take your nephews, nieces or your friends’ children somewhere. Let their parents stay alone with each other, and you look after the children — perhaps you will have a much more fun time.

2. Help a stranger

If there is no loved one nearby, give love to all mankind. Make someone smile. Volunteer at an orphanage or hospital. There are a lot of people around who are worse off than you.

3. Escape the city

You don’t need a partner to have a good time: get off the couch and go on an adventure. Visit a suburb you’ve always wanted to visit, or become a tourist in your hometown for a day.

4. Give love to friends and family

Love for a man is just one of many kinds of love. Use February 14 as an occasion to remind your family and friends how much you love them, how glad you are to have them in your life.

5. Visit a person who has no one

Think of those who are alone all the time. Visit an elderly relative who has lost her husband and now lives alone, give her some warmth.

6. Fill the day with meaning

Do what you promised yourself a long time ago. Start a new project, sign up for classes at a fitness club, clean your apartment — let this day be not in vain.

7. Wipe the nose of couples

It’s time to prove to lovers that a free girl can have a great time. Book a table in a chic restaurant for your single girlfriends. Throw yourself a party. Have fun annoying stiff couples with loud laughter and jokes.

8. Celebrate freedom

May February 14th be your day. Leave work early or take the day off. Do whatever you want. Treat yourself, go to a movie or a concert. Enjoy your freedom while you can afford it.

«Try to be happy here and now»

Veronika Kazantseva, psychologist

The main rule of good self-feeling and a harmonious state is to try to be happy here and now. It means living every moment of life. Do not turn everyday life into an expectation of a brighter future: «I will be happy when a man appears.»

Valentine’s Day is just a convention, a holiday that people have come up with. And the rules of conduct on this day are also invented. They are full of conventions.

What gives you pleasure? What can lift your spirits? Use every opportunity to please yourself. You are free and can do whatever you want. You do not need to adapt to someone else’s pre-planned scenario. In order not to be sad on February 14, make plans in advance. It doesn’t matter what you do, the main thing is that you really enjoy it.

Women who are dissatisfied with their relationship often come to me for consultations. They complain about their husband: “Everything is on schedule: love is recognized on February 14, flowers are given on March 8, breakfast in bed on my birthday. But in ordinary life he is indifferent, cold, disappears all the time at work.

Many create the appearance of a happy life only on holidays. But real life is right now. Holidays in it are arranged by you yourself, when you want, and not on the dates allotted for this.
