Symptoms of sickle cell anemia

  • Pain in the limbs, abdomen, back or chest – and sometimes in the bones. It is the main symptom in both children and adults.
  • Vulnerability to infections.
  • Edemas creating swelling in the feet and hands in infants. This can be the first symptom of the disease.
  • Those linked to a low level of red blood cells and which are common to other types of anemia: pale complexion, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, etc.
  • Those related to the destruction of red blood cells: a yellow coloration of the mucous membranes of the eyes and skin (in blacks, this symptom only manifests in the eyes) and dark urine.
  • Vision disturbances, up to blindness.
  • Those of acute chest syndrome: fever, cough, expectoration, difficulty in breathing, lack of oxygen.
