Stomach ache: when to consult?

Stomach ache: when to consult?

The special case of pregnancy

During pregnancy, stomach pain is common and this, from the first weeks.

Generally not serious, they are always worrying for the mother-to-be. They can have several origins. Among others? Ligament pain (due to the increase in the volume of the uterus), digestive pain (the baby takes up space and disrupts food transit), urinary pain (urinary tract infections are common and should be treated quickly), and of course muscle aches, related to the contractions of the uterus which, by distending, can undergo kinds of painful “spasms”.

Most ligament pain is relieved with a warm bath and rest. If the pain is accompanied by bleeding, loss of fluid, or any other worrying symptom (fever, vomiting), you should seek emergency help.

Finally, contractions are normal during the last trimester, provided they are not too painful, nor too regular. If they are numerous, intensify or do not calm down despite a hot bath, it is imperative to consult. It may be the beginning of labor, and it will be necessary to make sure that the baby is well and that the cervix is properly closed (unless it is full term!).
