Single-parent families: how does it work?

Single-parent families in search of happiness

Before, when we said yes, it was for life. Corn today, in France, one in three marriages ends in court. As a result, children increasingly live with only one parent. One in five families is a single parent.

Other circumstances can also explain this observation: a father who has never recognized his child or the death of one of the parents. It can also be an adoption by a single person.

Mothers, new heads of families

After a break-up, it is often the woman who obtains custody of the toddlers. In 85% of cases, single parents are mothers over 35. Motherhood and family life are increasingly combined in the singular and the feminine. As proof, the 2003 Dress study, revealing that more than one in four women, born in the 70s, will take care of their child alone for a while.

On the fathers side

Most often, fathers host their cherubs for weekends or school holidays. But being a part-time dad isn’t right for all men, and many of them seek custody of children. In 2005, 15% of single-parent families were headed by a man. Homes where children are often large and few in number.

Live with Mum or Dad, kif kif!

According to Jocelyne Dahan, family mediator in Toulouse, there are no differences in behavior in terms of education. Fathers, like mothers, often have the same reactions. Some people will not want to involve the child in conflicts and many consider him to be a confidant, a place which is however not his. In addition, INSEE reveals that the psychological consequences of a separation in children are the same, whether they live with their father or their mother.
