Scientists have learned 6 rules of what cats watch on TV

6 rules for the owner: how to watch TV with your pet.

Cat owners, of course, noticed with what interest their pets are watching what is happening on the screen. But if you think cats are attracted simply by flickering pictures and colored spots, you are wrong. Scientists were able to find out what exactly cats see and what programs they especially like.

British scientists have researched feline TV viewing habits and found a lot of interesting things. Here are some fun facts that came out of their scientific experiment.

1. Cats can distinguish between animate and inanimate objects on the screen. Their vision is designed so that they focus on a moving target. But they will not confuse the falling foliage with the animal creeping through the grass. And they will be happy to “hunt” for a hare that jumps across the screen.

2. Cats are able to distinguish living people and animals from cartoon characters. Researchers associate this with the peculiarities of the movements of the real creature and the drawn one. Even technically flawless cartoons do not have the same smoothness, accuracy and speed that a living object has. But in cartoons, they are happy to observe certain colors (more on that below) and sounds. The Internet is full of videos about how cats react to the meowing coming from the TV, and how dogs connect to the howling of a dog.

3. Cats enjoy watching the adventures of their own kind. Whether it’s a walking cat or a cheetah hunting in Africa. A year ago, there was a real flash mob on Twitter after the BBC aired the documentary Big Cats. The social network was filled with photos of pets that stuck to the screens and closely followed the cinema life of lions, panthers and leopards.

4. Cats don’t watch TV like humans. They do not think that this is a program or a movie, but sincerely believe that all these animals, people, soccer balls and pucks are just inside a large box. But after a couple of rounds and sniffs at the TV and unsuccessful attempts to catch the bird, they no longer fall for deception. They are ready to just watch life in a box.

5. Modern plasma TVs with a frame rate of more than 60 Hz give cats a clearer picture and attract more attention.… Old TVs (50 Hz and below) gave the cat’s vision rather blurry and distorted outlines, and therefore were more interested in the quality of color spots.

6. You can choose the perfect scene for the cat to watch, considering the color range that the cat’s eye perceives and does not perceive. So, in addition to black, white and gray, cats see cold shades: blue, yellow, green. They do not see red, orange, brown and too variegated combinations. In principle, color is not as important to a cat’s attention as the movement of an object.

Taking all this into account, you can arrange an experiment with your own cat and choose an individual film repertoire for her. For example, a cat will appreciate colorful documentaries about the life of felines, will be interested in the cartoon about blue active gnomes “Smurfs” and will be able to watch a sports match if the players enter the field in the form of cold shades.
