School violence: how is it expressed?

At school, violence is expressed in three different ways : verbally (mockery, slander, threats…), physically, or by thefts. “Harassment (accumulation of these three forms of abuse) is the form of violence the most suffered among 8-12 year olds », Explains Georges Fotinos. In total, nearly 12% of students are harassed.

School violence, gendered?

The specialist Georges Fotinos observes a majority of male abusers, but also victims. “This is due to the image, to the role that we give to man in society. The patriarchal image is still in people’s minds. “

At the same time, as they grow older, girls become more aggressive. ” When entering college, female violence tends to increase. It’s a way for them to assert themselves on a par with boys. Without forgetting the impact of socio-economic conditions, this phenomenon particularly affecting adolescent girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The teachers targeted

Violence against teachers and principals is also increasing. The students are less and less respectful. Just like the parents. The latter “see the school as a public service which must serve their needs. They are consumers. Their expectations vis-à-vis the school are very high. This explains some slippages… ”, explains Georges Fotinos.
