Risk factors for hepatitis A

  • Work in sewers or prisons, for the police or the fire department, garbage collection.
  • Travel to any country where hygiene regulations are poor – especially in underdeveloped countries. The following regions are particularly at risk: Mexico, Central America, South America, several areas of the Caribbean, Asia (except Japan), Eastern Europe, Middle East, Mediterranean basin, Africa.   • Stay in places at risk: school or company canteens, food centers, daycares, holiday camps, retirement homes, hospitals, dental centers.
  • Injection drug use. Although hepatitis A is infrequently transmitted through the blood, epidemics have been observed among those who inject illegal drugs.
  • Risky sexual practices.
