People at risk, risk factors and prevention of male sexual dysfunction

People at risk

All men are likely to experience a decline in their sexual satisfaction during their lifetime as a result of any of the difficulties described in this sheet. The men most at risk are:

– Men taking medication,

– Sedentary men (no physical exercise),

– Men consuming tobacco (catastrophic for erection), excessive alcohol or other drugs.

– Men with diabetes,

– Men suffering from a neurological disease,

– Men suffering from excess cholesterol,

– Men with high blood pressure,

– Men who have suffered an accident in the small pelvis.

– Older men, because they are more at risk of having diseases or drugs, it is not the age itself which is harmful.

– Men with a difficult relationship,

– Men lacking self-confidence,

– Men suffering from anxiety or depression,

– Men with an unbalanced diet (few fruits and vegetables, too much fat and sugar),

– Men who are overweight or obese.

Risk factors

See the list of possible causes above.

Preventions

Basic preventive measures

The sexual dysfunctions often being caused by a bad arterial circulation, it is important to limit the risk factors for cardiovascular disorders, among other things by making sure to maintain good lipid levels in the blood (see our advice in the Hypercholesterolemia sheet). Likewise, men with high blood pressure should seek treatment, while those with diabetes should be careful to keep their blood sugar as close to normal as possible.

Maintaining good health increases the chances of having satisfying sex.

  • Limit alcohol consumption;
  • Stop smoking (see our Smoking sheet);
  • Exercise regularly;
  • Maintain a correct weight;
  • Improve your ability to fight stress;
  • Get enough sleep;
  • Treat depression or anxiety as needed;
  • Since sexual relations are linked not only to physical factors, but also psychological ones, anyone who wishes to act in prevention must not exclude the factors of emotional and relational health. So a sex therapy may be indicated in the event of persistent concerns or discomfort. Seek medical advice if needed.

To learn more about the various ways ofenrich your sexuality, see our Sexuality section. In particular, you will find an interview with sex therapist Sylviane Larose: Spice it up: get out of bed!
