Peony “Sarah Bernhardt” is one of the most popular varieties. He fell in love with gardeners more than a century ago and still does not give up positions in front of new varieties. The French breeder who created it named it after the famous actress of her time.

It is a herbaceous shrub up to 1 m high. Flowering is medium late, which allows you to enjoy its beauty when many varieties have already faded.

This variety has the following characteristics:
- The main decoration of the shrub is its large, lush flowers. They grow up to 20 cm in diameter.
- The petals are pink, the edges are decorated with a silver border. They are collected in a rounded inflorescence cap.
- The leaves are dissected, abundantly frame the shoots. The dark green saturated color turns into crimson in the fall, which preserves the decorative effect of the bush.
- Stems are thick and strong, they easily hold large flowers, do not lean to the ground and do not fall after rain. They do not need support like many other flowering shrubs.
The plant is versatile – suitable for garden decoration and also good for cutting. Keeps freshness in bouquets for a long time.
Planting and caring for peony varieties “Sarah Bernhardt”
This variety is undemanding to care for. It can grow on any soil, but still loves organic fertilizing and nutritious soil. Peonies planted in such soil do not require additional fertilization in the first 2 years.
The basic rules for keeping this flower on the site are very simple:
- With a strong deepening of the seedling, the plant will not bloom. Therefore, when planting, the peony should be covered with a layer of earth a few centimeters, and the buds should be 3-5 cm from ground level.
- The landing site should be open and well lit. Do not plant peonies in the shade of trees or buildings. Lack of light will negatively affect flowering.
- It is necessary to monitor the aeration of the soil. There should be no crust on the surface, so after watering it should be loosened and weeds removed.
- Do not let the soil dry out during the flowering period. The rest of the time, the frequency of humidification should be reduced.
This plant is frost-resistant. In the first 2 years, it needs to be covered before cold weather, and adult bushes can hibernate without protective shelter. In the fall, before the onset of frost, all the leaves are cut off.
The best way to plant is by dividing the bush. When transplanting, it must be divided, the whole plant will not take root. The ability to bloom appears 2-3 years after planting.
