Nutrition for sepsis

General description of the disease

Sepsis (translated from Latin “decay”) is a dangerous infectious disease that develops after bacteria and fungi enter the bloodstream, as well as their toxins. The progression of sepsis is due to the periodic or constant ingress of microorganisms into the blood from the focus of decay.

Sepsis causes

The causative agents of sepsis are fungi and bacteria (for example, streptococci, staphylococci, salmonella). The disease occurs due to the inability of the body to localize the primary focus of infection. This is due to the presence of an atypical state of immunity.

Also at risk are people with low immunity, people who have lost a lot of blood for one reason or another, as well as people who have undergone major surgery or are suffering from nutritional deficiencies.

In addition, the infection can enter the bloodstream during medical procedures, operations, during abortions and childbirth in inappropriate conditions.

Sepsis symptoms:

  • Loss of appetite;
  • Weakness and tachycardia;
  • Chills and fever;
  • Shortness of breath;
  • Nausea and vomiting;
  • Pallor of the skin;
  • Hemorrhagic rash.

Types of sepsis:

  1. 1 Surgical sepsis – occurs after surgical diseases (phlegmon, carbuncles);
  2. 2 Therapeutic sepsis – occurs with internal diseases or inflammatory processes of internal organs as a complication (with pneumonia, angina, cholecystitis).

In addition, the following forms of sepsis exist:

  • Sharp;
  • Поодострая;
  • Chronic.

Useful foods for sepsis

Food for sepsis should be balanced and easily digestible, as well as sufficiently fortified. It is this, along with proper patient care, that determines the outcome of treatment. People with sepsis should receive at least 2500 kcal per day (with sepsis in the postpartum period – at least 3000 kcal). At the same time, complete proteins and carbohydrates, as well as sugar, should be present in the diet.

In addition, you should rinse your mouth after each meal.

  • You can provide the body with a sufficient amount of protein by eating cheeses, cottage cheese, meat of birds and animals, most types of fish, nuts, beans, peas, chicken eggs, pasta, as well as semolina, buckwheat, oat and millet.
  • Eating vegetables (beets, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, bell peppers, onions, celery and lettuce), fruits (apples, apricots, bananas, blackberries, blueberries, melon, grapes, watermelon, citrus fruits, strawberries, raspberries, plums, pineapple), legumes (beans, beans, peas), nuts and seeds (almonds, cashews, coconut, macadamia nuts, peanuts, walnuts, pistachios, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds), as well as cereals (rice , buckwheat, oatmeal, durum wheat pasta, muesli, bran) enriches the body with complex carbohydrates, which not only take longer to over-pick, but also provide the body with energy and nutrients.
  • In moderation, you can eat bread and flour products made from white flour, as they are rich in simple carbohydrates and sugar.
  • With sepsis, you need to eat pine nuts, liver, chicken eggs, processed cheese, cottage cheese, goose meat, mushrooms (champignons, chanterelles, honey mushrooms), some types of fish (for example, mackerel), rose hips, spinach, since these products are rich in vitamin B2. It is not only easily absorbed by the body, but also has a direct effect on the growth and renewal of tissues, as well as on the liver. It is this organ that suffers primarily in the treatment of sepsis due to the use of antibiotics. Moreover, it is important to remember that with a fever, the body is deficient in this vitamin.
  • Adequate intake of vitamin C is of great importance in the treatment of sepsis, since it is an antioxidant, removes toxins and poisons, and protects the body from infections.
  • Patients with sepsis should also get enough fluids per day (2-3 liters). It can be juices, mineral waters, green tea. By the way, recent studies by Chinese scientists have shown that the substances contained in green tea help fight sepsis, but experiments in this area are still underway. Some doctors advise patients to use red wine for sepsis, as it is rich in nutrients and trace elements such as zinc, chromium, sodium, magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium, etc. It also has a beneficial effect on the blood, increasing the number of red blood cells, increasing hemoglobin level and removing radionuclides. In addition, red wine is an antioxidant. However, even with such an abundance of useful properties, they should not be abused. 100-150 ml of this drink per day will be quite enough.
  • Also, people with sepsis need to eat liver, seaweed, feta cheese, sweet potato, broccoli, processed cheese, viburnum, eel meat, spinach, carrots, apricots, pumpkin, egg yolks, fish oil, milk and cream, as they are sources vitamin A. It not only enhances immunity, but also protects the body from infections. It also improves the activity of blood leukocytes and is an antioxidant.
  • In addition, the liver, as well as almonds, wild rice, buckwheat, barley, beans, nuts, rice bran, melon, watermelon and sesame contains pangamic acid, or vitamin B15. It has a positive effect on the liver, has anti-inflammatory and antitoxic properties, and also lowers blood cholesterol levels.
  • Also, in case of sepsis, it is important to consume white citrus peels, blueberries, raspberries, rose hips, blackberries, black currants, cherries, apricots, grapes, cabbage, tomatoes, parsley, dill and chilli peppers, as they contain vitamin P. It is an antioxidant, increases resistance the body to infections and, most importantly, promotes the absorption of vitamin C.

Folk remedies for sepsis

It is very important for people with sepsis to see a doctor in time and start treatment in order not only to purify the blood, but also to neutralize the focus of infection. Traditional medicine offers its own methods of treating this disease, based precisely on the purification of the blood.
