Preparing seedlings in September

It would seem that what kind of seedlings can we talk about in September – this is the time for harvesting. In the garden and vegetable garden – yes, but in flower beds it’s time to do just planting.

Plant seedlings of biennials. In the first decade of September, you can safely plant violets (pansies), forget-me-nots, daisies, Turkish carnations, moonflowers, bluebells, aquilegia, primroses, cornflowers, yarrows, lychnis, foxglove, mallow and delphiniums in flower beds. The easiest way is to buy ready-made seedlings in containers, but you can grow seedlings from seeds yourself (for this they are sown in the first half of summer).

After planting the seedlings, you need to water it well, and then mulch the soil with humus, peat or dry leaves – it is important that moisture is retained in the soil (there are still warm days in September, and the soil dries quickly), and in winter such mulch will protect the roots from freezing .

Plant bulbous flowers. Among them are tulips, crocuses (1), daffodils, hyacinths, hazel grouses and various small bulbous plants.

The best time for landing is from 10 to 20 September. You should not rush – in warm weather, the bulbs can germinate, and the green leaves will not survive the winter – frost will kill them. But it is not advisable to delay, because the bulbous need 30 – 40 days to take root. And it is important that they have time to do this before the soil freezes.

The depth of embedding is equal to three diameters of the bulb. That is, if you have bulbs with a diameter of 2 cm, then you need to close them by 6 cm. At the same time, remember that the distance is considered from the bottom of the bulb.

Make a sanitary pruning of the garden. The first step is to cut out all dry branches – they are very fragile and easily break under the weight of snow in winter. Falling, these branches can damage healthy ones.

Then you need to remove all diseased shoots – with damaged bark, thickenings and other signs of ill health. If they are left, in the spring they will become a breeding ground for diseases and pests. All these branches must be burned.

Cut off the fruiting raspberry shoots. Raspberries give the main crop on two-year-old shoots, and starting from the 3rd year, it drops sharply. That is, there is no sense in the old shoots, but they greatly thicken the plantings, take water, nutrition and light from the young shoots. In addition, pathogens accumulate in them. Therefore, they must be removed. Leave only well-developed shoots (2).

Cut the shoots should be flush with the soil, and even better a little deeper. In no case should there be stumps in the raspberries – pests hibernate in them.

Feed the garden. In autumn, fruit trees and berry bushes need phosphorus and potassium – they help plants to winter better. The terms and doses of fertilizer application depend on the crop (the norms are indicated for 1 plant):

  • apples and pears are fed immediately after harvesting: 300 g (1,5 cups) of double superphosphate and 250 g (1 cup) of potassium sulfate;
  • cherries – in mid-September: 200 g (1 glass) of double superphosphate and 60 g (3 tablespoons) of potassium sulfate;
  • currants – in the last days of September: 100 g (half a glass) of double superphosphate and 200 g (10 tablespoons) of potassium sulfate.

If there is black steam under the plants, that is, bare soil, then fertilizers can simply be evenly scattered around the perimeter of the crown and raked into the soil. If grass grows under them (lawn or meadow turf), then holes should be drilled along the perimeter of the crown at an equal distance from each other to a depth of 20–30 cm, fertilizers should be poured there (the norm must be divided into equal parts by the number of holes), and sprinkled on top soil.

Dig planting holes. If it is planned to plant fruit trees and berry bushes with an open root system (ACS) in autumn, then in September it is necessary to take care of preparing planting pits – it is advisable to dig them out in a month, and then fill them with fertile soil with fertilizers. Until the moment of planting, natural biological processes will go on in the pit, the soil, as experts say, will “ripen”, which means that the seedling will take root better.

Seedlings are planted in mid-October, therefore, it is necessary to dig holes in mid-September.

Plant winter garlic. The teeth of winter varieties are planted in the last days of September. The landing pattern is as follows:

  • between rows – 25 cm;
  • in a row – 15 cm;
  • depth – 5 cm.

The cloves should be planted to a depth of 5–6 cm. After planting, it is useful to mulch them with humus or peat with a layer of 2–3 cm (3).

Sow green manure. The main rule of successful farming is: the land should not be empty. Harvest – sow green manure in this place. The most affordable of them are oats, rye, rapeseed and mustard. For about a month they will grow, and then, in October, they must be mowed or cut, evenly spread over the same area and dug up.

Green manure is an excellent natural fertilizer. In addition, they heal the soil (especially mustard – it inhibits the development of pathogens and the growth of weeds), make it loose and fertile.

September harvest

Harvest this month ripens both in the garden and in the garden. And it is important to clean everything on time and correctly, so that the fruits are then stored for a long time.

Apples and pears. In September, the fruits of autumn and winter varieties are harvested – they are intended for winter storage. But in order for apples and pears to lie for a long time, it is important to follow the cleaning rules:

  • harvest only with gloves – this is especially important for women, because the fruits can be accidentally scratched with nails, and such will not be stored;
  • pick fruits with stalks;
  • start harvesting from the lower branches and then gradually move to the upper ones;
  • harvest in the morning in the cold – fruits harvested in the heat are stored worse;
  • in no case should you wipe the fruits – their skin is covered with a thin wax coating, and it is he who protects the fruit from spoilage.

Tomatoes. From September 5, frosts are already possible in the middle lane, and tomatoes do not tolerate them. Therefore, it is necessary to collect all the fruits that are still hanging on the bushes. Including brown ones – in a warm room at a temperature of 23 – 25 ° C, they will ripen in 4 – 6 days (4).

Tomato tops must be immediately pulled out and put into compost, or burned so that plant residues do not become a source of disease infection (pathogen spores always remain on them).

Roots. All root crops (with the possible exception of radishes) are harvested in the fall, but at different times – each culture has its own:

  • beets are harvested in early September – they must be in time before the first frost, otherwise they will not be stored;
  • carrots – at the end of September;
  • root parsley – in the second decade of September.

Folk omens in September

  • If there are a lot of mushrooms, there will be a warm snowless winter.
  • A lot of cobwebs on plants – it will stay warm until mid-October.
  • A lot of acorns – for a harsh and long winter.
  • If the leaves on the birch begin to turn yellow from below, spring will be late.
  • The drier and warmer September, the later winter will come.

Popular questions and answers

We talked about garden and garden work in September with agronomist-breeder Svetlana Mikhailova.

Do I need to feed trees and shrubs with nitrogen in autumn?
No, it doesn `t need. In September, it can provoke the growth of shoots that will not have time to ripen by winter and freeze, but the plants will spend energy on them and will not have time to prepare for the cold, which will also affect their winter hardiness.

At later dates, for example, in October, it is pointless to apply nitrogen – it is easily washed out of the soil and by the beginning of active growth it will no longer be left.

How to cover up cuts after pruning trees?
Sections with a diameter of up to 2 cm are best covered with children’s plasticine. Garden pitches have not proven themselves in the best way – studies have been conducted that have shown that most of them worsen wound healing.

Large saw cuts are best painted over with oil paint on natural drying oil.

Is it possible to harvest root crops in rainy weather?
Better, of course, dry. But if there are no options, it is constantly raining and the forecast does not promise an improvement in the weather, then it is not worth delaying harvesting – the crop may simply rot.

Root crops dug out in wet weather must be dried indoors for several days. And only after that they can be sent to storage.
