Is there anesthesia for pregnant women
There is no harmless anesthesia for pregnant women, but there are remedies that can be used during the period of carrying a baby if absolutely necessary. If possible, it is better to postpone their use until later in pregnancy in order to exclude a harmful effect on the fetus.
When may pregnant women need anesthesia?
It is better not to carry out surgical operations for pregnant women at all, expectant tactics are preferable – a delay until the moment the child is born.
But medical manipulations with the use of anesthetics are necessary when:
- appendicitis;
- ovarian cyst;
- tumors of the mammary glands;
- early opening of the cervix, when it is required to apply preserving sutures to the cervix;
- severe injuries;
- tooth extraction.
As a rule, surgical interventions with the use of anesthetic drugs are required for women in 1-2% of cases of bearing a child.
Is there anesthesia for pregnant women?
There are 3 types of anesthesia:
- Local, when a certain area is temporarily anesthetized by the introduction of an anesthetic. It is considered the safest for a pregnant woman and a fetus. Most often it is used in the treatment of teeth and opening up abscesses. For such anesthesia of pregnant women, Ultracaine, Lidocaine, Ubistezin are used. These drugs poorly penetrate the placenta, therefore they are unable to harm the baby, although they can cause allergic manifestations in the expectant mother.
- Regional. It is done when it is impossible to apply local anesthesia. With this method of anesthesia, the sensitivity of a certain part of the body is “turned off”, the drug is injected around the nerves. For this anesthesia, the same means are used as for local anesthesia.
- General. This type of anesthesia involves switching off the consciousness of a pregnant woman by inhalation or intravenous administration. For inhalation anesthesia of pregnant women, Ftorotane, Halothane, Isoblurane are often used. But these drugs can lead to impaired blood flow in the placenta and uterus. General anesthesia for pregnant women is done with the drugs Kalilsol, Fentanyl, Listenon.
All drugs for anesthesia are prescribed individually, taking into account the age, health status of the woman and the duration of pregnancy.
Despite the fact that there are anesthetics approved for use during pregnancy, if possible, it is necessary to postpone surgical operations in pregnant women at a later date in order to avoid side effects and negative effects on the fetus.
