How to store dairy products correctly

Products made from milk have a short shelf life and the fresher they are, the healthier they are. It is not worth buying it with a stock, and knowledge of how to properly store the “milk” will also be important.

Milk

Village milk has a very short shelf life, in order to prolong it in production, milk is pasteurized. Now there are several types of pasteurization: long-term, short-term and instant. The most useful milk remains after a long and short-term pasteurization, but, unfortunately, it is very rare to read on the packaging how exactly milk is pasteurized.

It is best to store milk on the upper shelves of the refrigerator, and after opening the package, the shelf life decreases sharply and is about a day. It is best to keep milk in glass and enamel containers.

Kefir

Choose kefir with a shelf life of 7 days, in glass or cardboard containers. Try to keep the purchased kefir as fresh as possible, ideally two days. It is this kefir that is most useful for digestion. After opening the package, kefir should be drunk for 2 days.

Yogurt

Real yogurt has a shelf life of up to 7 days, drinking yoghurt – up to 10 days, and low-fat – up to 2 weeks. It is also better to store it on the top shelf of the refrigerator and use it immediately after opening the package. Interestingly, yoghurts can be frozen, thereby extending their shelf life up to 2 months. But, this can be done once, without resorting to repeated freezing.

Cream

The shelf life of high-quality sour cream is 10 days in a sealed package, and up to 3 days after opening. The best choice of containers for storing sour cream would be a glass jar with a tight lid. It is very important to scoop up the sour cream with a clean, dry spoon so that no water gets into it. Do not risk eating sour cream that is not the first freshness, it is better to use it for baking. Store sour cream on the bottom shelves of the refrigerator.

Curd

Fresh cottage cheese can be stored in the refrigerator on the coldest shelves for up to 4 days. It must be stored in plastic containers or enameled containers that are not tightly closed with a lid. The higher the fat content of the cottage cheese, the shorter its shelf life. You can extend the life of cottage cheese by freezing it. But it is advisable to do this for no more than a week.
