How to choose a plant for harvesting cuttings

To obtain high-quality seedlings, it is necessary to competently approach the preparation of shanks. Mother material must be selected in advance and tagged.

Vine selection criteria:

  • absolutely healthy plant, without traces of diseases and mechanical damage;
  • high yield;
  • you subjectively like these particular varieties, and there is a desire to breed them.

When to cut grape cuttings? The harvesting of the shanks is traditionally started in October, when the leaves fall. But in northern latitudes it is better to carry out this work earlier, without waiting for frost. If the leaf is easily separated from the trunk, then you can safely start grafting.

How to cut grape cuttings for planting

In early autumn, when the vine is ripe, you can start grafting. This is a rather crucial period for the grower. Prepare a sharp pruner in advance, and to avoid contamination of the plant, it must be disinfected in advance.

  1. Choose the most even vine for grafting.
  2. The width of the shank should be from 0,5 to 0,9 cm. If it is larger, then this is an shoot, and it will not give a good harvest, and a thin twig will not survive wintering.
  3. Make sure there are no stepchildren, tendrils, leaves, and excess bark.
  4. The length of the shank should be from 0,5 to 1,5 m;
  5. The handle should have 3 to 8 internodes and 2 to 5 healthy buds.
  6. Choose a suitable vine; moving from bottom to top, cut off the stalk. The pruner needs to be held slightly at an angle to keep the edge straight.
  7. Remove the lower peephole.

Now you need to prepare the seedlings for wintering. It must first be disinfected. Professionals use special chemicals for this purpose.

In private grape growing, it is permissible to use simpler means:

  • soaking the shanks for a day in water and subsequent treatment with a solution of potassium permanganate;
  • treatment with copper sulfate diluted in water – 30 g per 1 liter.

After these procedures, grape cuttings are tied into bunches by varieties, supplied with information labels and stored.
