Hedgehog team: plant photo

The hedgehog is a meadow and ornamental plant. This herb, which is used to feed livestock, can perfectly decorate a flower bed. A group of plants forms a fluffy hummock.

This perennial has a characteristic, easily recognizable spikelet panicle. Each spikelet consists of shaggy bunches on which small flowers are formed. The roots of the cereal are creeping and shallow. The photo of the team hedgehog shows a cereal crop with a height of 30 to 150 cm.

The hedgehog team blooms twice a day

The plant is found almost all over the world, it grows well in Russia: in meadows and glades. The cereal begins to bloom in June. This happens twice a day: in the morning and in the evening, less intense in the evening. In rainy weather, the grass does not bloom. Its pollen is a strong human allergen.

This plant is one of the meadow grasses that are grown for pet food. You can mow it repeatedly: it grows back quickly. However, the cereal will give good growth only for the 2-3rd year. Due to the shallow bedding of the root system, it is used to maintain the sod layer in the steppes and forest-steppe. The plant does not like the neighborhood: its toxins inhibit the growth of surrounding grasses.

Hedgehog plant prefabricated in the garden

It is not difficult to grow this cereal in the garden: it is not capricious. At the same time, he has his own needs and preferences:

  • The plant loves moist clay soils and loams, but does not tolerate stagnant water.
  • It is shade and drought tolerant.
  • Spring and autumn frosts destroy this grass, and it does not tolerate snowless winters.
  • This grass should not be used for “pedestrian” lawns: it is trampled.
  • It can only be planted as a monoculture; it will suppress other herbs and flowers.

By sowing seeds on a separate piece of land, you will get a lush decorative island that will grow well already in the 2nd year.

Planting and caring for this herb is easy. The seeds of the plant can be harvested in July – September. Water the grass after sowing. You can feed it with mineral fertilizer 2 times per season. This cereal will not tolerate other weeds near it, so it does not need weeding. If there is little snowfall in winter, shovel a small snowdrift onto the bush to protect it from frost.

The islets of cereal crops will perfectly fit into the design of the garden area. Decorative bumps that bloom twice a day will attract attention. People with allergies will have to abandon such a plant in the country.
