Galanthus flower: herb for outdoor use
Galanthus is the official name for the familiar snowdrop. Such a flower can be planted in the garden, and it will delight you with its flowering one of the first in spring.
Planting Galanthus herb in open ground
This flower is best planted in open areas. In nature, he chooses forest glades. It is there, under the rays of the first spring sun, that the snow melts first. Any soil is suitable, except for heavy, clayey. Plant flowers in groups of 10 to 20. Planting time is from mid-June to November. During this period, the bulbs are dormant. Planting depth – one and a half bulb lengths.
The main thing in growing a flower is choosing the right bulb. It should be smooth, hard, and free from damage. Remember that the bulb of this flower does not tolerate prolonged contact with air, so it cannot be stored for more than 2 months.
Bulbs are often sold in the spring when they bloom. Flowering bushes look tempting for buyers, but spring is the worst time to plant snowdrops. In the future, you can independently propagate snowdrops with baby bulbs. It is enough to dig them out and plant them once every 3-5 years.
Here are some basic grooming tips:
- Snowdrops love moisture, but they usually get it naturally from the melting snow. It is necessary to water the flowers abundantly only if the winter has little snow or the spring is too dry.
- During active growth, be sure to feed the plant with liquid mineral fertilizer. Its composition should be dominated by phosphate and potassium. The first helps the daughter bulbs to form, and the second improves flowering. Remember that nitrogen affects snowdrops negatively. Compost and humus are acceptable as top dressing. If you are using manure, it must be rotted.
- It is not necessary to cover snowdrops for the winter. You can cover them with humus, but only in a very thin layer.
Galanthus flower can suffer from gray mold and chlorosis. Of the pests, slugs, caterpillars, and bulbous nematode attack it. Affected plants need to be treated in time, and if it does not work, then immediately remove them so that they do not infect the rest.
Follow all the planting and care tips described, and then in early spring, when everything is still in hibernation around, you will see charming white flowers in your garden. They will cheer up after winter and become the main decoration of the personal plot.
