Epilepsy is a multifaceted disease. Often, it presents itself in a dramatic and spectacular way. No wonder our ancestors believed these were cases of demonic possession or some paranormal phenomenon. It is also no wonder that many people with the disease have been victims of all kinds of prejudices, for example: people with epilepsy have a lower than average IQ, which is not true.

If a seizure does occur, the first step is to confirm that it is epilepsy rather than another condition that looks like it. Strictly followed medical treatment then allows the affected person to lead a normal life, in the majority of cases.
