The symptoms of dizziness, the nature and duration of them, the frequency of the onset of attacks – all this helps the doctor to correctly establish the cause of the disease. And if the following symptoms are observed, it is important to immediately contact a specialist:

  • dizziness may be accompanied by hearing loss and discharge from the ears, which is the first symptom of inner ear inflammation; as a rule, in such cases, conservative treatment is sufficient, which will be prescribed by a doctor;

  • with the appearance of tinnitus, partial hearing loss, vomiting and nausea – perhaps this is a disease of the inner ear, causing an increase in the amount of fluid in its cavity,

  • if there is no auditory dysfunction, it may be a sudden onset of vestibular neuritis, its symptoms are severe dizziness when trying to turn your head or stand up, severe constant vomiting, symptoms appear and disappear suddenly;

  • symptoms of one-sided deafness – noise and ringing in the ears;

  • a feeling of disorientation and unstable position with dizziness, aggravated by neck movement, for example, turning the head from side to side, in which severe pain occurs – most likely this is a disease of the cervical spine;

  • persistent dizziness preceding a headache attack is diagnosed as basilar migraine;

  • severe dizziness during air travel, travel by car or train is called transport motion sickness;

  • dizziness may occur due to taking a course of antibiotics, in which case it is necessary to cancel the intake, reduce the dose or change the drug.

False symptoms of dizziness

Very often people confuse the symptoms of dizziness with other similar symptoms. It is possible to clearly distinguish a number of signs, which are popularly called “dizziness”:

  • sudden darkening in the eyes that occurs immediately after a sharp change in body position, for example, after a sharp rise from a prone position;

  • loss of vision and a feeling of a veil in front of the eyes;

  • weakness, sweating, a feeling of unsteadiness in your legs, or a feeling of wobbling;

  • a sharp loss of orientation and a feeling of nearness of fainting;

  • loss of balance.

False signs of dizziness are quite common in women, especially in the first half of pregnancy. This is due to a decrease in the concentration of glucose in the blood. As such, there is no method of treatment, unless of course the reason is something else.

Diagnosis and effective treatment of vertigo

With persistent dizziness, treatment should focus on eliminating the cause. And since the list of diseases associated with dizziness is too large, the patient will need extensive examination and diagnostics to find out the causes and associated disorders. To begin with, you need to consult a therapist, and then you will need an examination by a neurologist and an otolaryngologist. It is also necessary to examine the auditory and vestibular apparatus.

To detect specific neurological symptoms, a neurologist may need an X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine. You can also carry out laboratory diagnostics to detect somatic diseases.

Currently, various pharmaceutical preparations have a positive effect in the treatment of dizziness, but they should be prescribed only by the attending physician on the basis of complaints and the results of the patient’s diagnosis. They are used to relieve severe dizziness, as well as to prevent seizures. Thanks to drug treatment, neurotransmitters are released from the nerve endings, as a result of which the blood circulation in the brain improves, the frequency of attacks of constant dizziness decreases.

There are general recommendations for people suffering from frequent attacks of dizziness:

  • exclude table salt from the diet;

  • give up alcohol and smoking;

  • reduce daily caffeine intake to a minimum;

  • do not make sudden movements of the head and neck.

Vertigo relief measures

At the first symptoms of dizziness, the person should be placed on their back so that their shoulders, neck and head lie on a pillow. This must be done in order to avoid kinking of the vertebral arteries. You should also exclude head turns, it is better to keep your head stationary. Next – open the windows, ventilate the room well. Apply a cold towel, previously moistened with vinegar, to the patient’s forehead.

The victim needs to measure blood pressure, pulse, possibly temperature. If the heartbeat is more than 100 beats per minute and the victim complains of nausea, it is necessary to call an ambulance or take the person to the nearest medical facility, where he can be provided with professional help.
