Discover the Gastrofestival Madrid 2014

This week, the city of Madrid surrenders to the art of gastronomy with the celebration of Gastrofestival Madrid. The programming for the fifth edition of this culinary event, which will be held between January 24 and February 9, has been presented by the mayor of the capital. More than 300 activities that will discover the world of cuisine and its connection with disciplines such as painting, cinema, literature, fashion or design for all Madrilenians and visitors.

For this, an extensive program has been designed that will propose five interesting dishes: 

  • “Gastrocultura” (cuisine seen from other artistic specialties)
  • “Sensory Experiences” (tastings, routes and workshops)
  • “Madrid Gastronomico” (menus at 25 and 40 euros)
  • “Degustatapas” (itineraries through pastry shops and cafes)
  • “Gastrofashion” (gastronomic whims in the stores of great designers and “Menus by Elle”)
  • “Gastrosalud” (healthy dishes, eco menus and shops and health treatments).

Gastrofestival Madrid is an event promoted by the municipal company Madrid Destino, in collaboration with Madrid Fusión and with the sponsorship of American Express and Mahou. More than 400 establishments and institutions in the capital collaborate in it, such as restaurants, bars, museums, art galleries, gourmet shops, cocktail bars, cooking schools or bookstores.

Main novelties 2014

Among the most outstanding activities of this fifth edition of Gastrofestival Madrid is “Nineteenth-century Bocados” (January 25 and February 8), a workshop at the Cerralbo Museum in which typical nineteenth-century recipes will be reproduced, and “Literary snacks” ( January 30 and February 6), some gatherings on gastronomy that will have the San Ginés chocolate shop as a backdrop and in which writers from different generations will participate. This year, the Prado organizes “Sweets and wines” (January 24, 25, 26 and 31 and February 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9), a tour of a selection of paintings from its permanent collection that will emphasize in these two foods.

Other museums and cultural spaces in the capital have once again joined the Gastrofestival Madrid program with interesting proposals. This is the case of the Museo del Traje (“The cocktail dress, dressed for a new era”), the Museum of Anthropology (“Sushi, a practical trip to Japanese gastronomy”), the Sorolla Museum (“The orange: ingredient, dressing and dessert ”and“ The wines of Jávea and Sorolla’s painting ”) or the Museum of Romanticism.

“Dinner with the stars”

One of the highlights of Gastrofestival will be “Dinner with the stars”, thanks to which, in an exceptional way, you can taste the menus of renowned foreign chefs, who will cook as guests in some Madrid restaurants. A great sample of the best international cuisine in the heart of Madrid. Kamilla Seidler and Michelangelo Cestari, from the Bolivian restaurant Gustu, will offer a very special menu on January 29, at the Europa Decó restaurant at the Urban hotel.

On the 30th, the recognized as the best Asian cook, the Thai Duangporn Songvisava, will recreate some of her creations, inspired by organic cuisine, at the Goya restaurant of the Ritz Madrid hotel. On the same day, the Mexican Juan José Gómez, who directs the kitchens of the Coral and Marina hotel, will display his culinary skills at Dassa Bassa, while the Turkish Ufuk Ügümü, from the Hünkar restaurant, will do so at the El Jardín del Orfila restaurant.

The Japanese Tatsuo Nishizawa, from the Hattori school restaurant in Tokyo, will prepare a special dinner at Al Trapo, the gastronomic space of the Las Letras hotel. Another Mexican, Daniel Ovadia (Paxia restaurant), will be in charge of the kitchen at Villamagna Rodrigo de la Calle, on January 31st.

Design and gastronomy

Culinary art seen from the perspective of design will be present at Gastrofestival by the hand of Vitra. This firm will host in its showroom in Madrid, located in the Salamanca district, the exhibition “Design and Gastronomy”, with works by the illustrator Jacobo Gavira. In addition, several special activities will be organized, which will revolve around the world of cooking and will have recreated dining rooms as the setting with tables and chairs by Frenchman Jean Prouvé and Americans Charles & Ray Eames. For example, a round table with the gastronomy design expert Juli Capella.
