Choosing the right size of condom: how to do it?

Choosing the right size of condom: how to do it?

The condom is the only protection that can protect against unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and infections. It is therefore imperative to choose it well, and in particular to find the right size.

What is the male condom?

The male condom, made of latex, is a kind of flexible sheath that fits over the erect penis, impermeable to blood, semen or vaginal fluids. It helps protect against unwanted pregnancy as well as STDs and STIs.

This method of contraception and protection is single-use: the condom must be tied and discarded after each use. Finally, for ease of use, it may be recommended to use a lubricant, preferably non-greasy (water-based), which is sold with condoms.

How to put on a male condom?

The condom remains a fragile object, since it is made of a fairly thin material. It must therefore be handled with care, and not be rushed, at the risk of not ensuring optimal protection.

  • Open the condom bag with your fingers: do not use your teeth or scissors to avoid accidentally cutting or tearing the bag. Likewise, be careful with long fingernails or rings which can also be sharp.
  • Once out, do not unroll the condom before putting it on.
  • First pinch the reservoir (intended to collect the semen) between the thumb and the index finger, in order to expel the air present inside.
  • Then slowly unroll the condom over the erect penis, until you reach the base of the penis.
  • To do this, place it on the glans in the direction of the lubricated side outwards. If it’s the wrong way, it won’t go smoothly.

How to choose the size of a condom?

There are several sizes of condoms, depending on the width of the wearer’s penis. It is important to be vigilant at these sizes. A condom that is too small will be tight and uncomfortable. Above all, it is likely to crack and therefore no longer be effective in protecting against STDs, STIs, and unwanted pregnancy. Conversely, a condom that is too large may move and not adhere sufficiently to the shape of the penis. You can choose the size of your condom using the indications on the boxes. In stores and pharmacies, there are generally three sizes: small, medium or large. On the Internet, however, you can find many sites that offer larger sizes. The average size of an erect penis is 14 cm. For men who are below this number, a small condom is recommended. A medium size can also be suitable, so just do not unroll the entire condom.

Different sizes for different penis

The average size of an erect penis is in France between 12 and 17 cm. This being only an average, it is quite possible and normal that you are below or above this one. The average size of condoms also varies by brand. Thus, a “standard” model can measure 165 mm long for one brand for 175 mm for another. A “king size” model (almost all brands offer one) can reach up to 200 mm in length for some brands. The width also varies: between 52 and 56 mm for the large model sizes. This parameter is also to be taken into account, because the condom must be as close as possible to the penis, without tightening it and thus creating a garot effect which can cause it to crack during intercourse. So be sure to find the right make and model for you by trying several, and do not necessarily rely on the name of the model shown. Instead, look at the precise measurements of the condom, which will tell you more.

Where can I find condoms?

It is quite easy to get hold of condoms. You can buy packs of them in all large and medium-sized stores, as well as in small downtown grocery stores. Pharmacies and para-pharmacies also sell it. You will often find a larger selection there, including models without latex and / or various sizes. On the Internet, several sites also offer sizes ranging from XS to XXL, and models in different flavors or colors. You can also get free condoms from some associations, such as Family Planning, or from AIDS and STD screening centers. Finally, all schools also have free self-service condoms.
