Postcovid complications may turn out to be a bigger problem than falling ill with COVID-19 – believes Prof. Maciej Banach. – If we cannot recover from COVID-19, do not underestimate it, let us see a doctor – adds the cardiologist.

Prof. Maciej Banach pointed out that a greater problem than the treatment of COVID-19 and the severe course of this coronavirus-induced disease may be complications after its resolution, not only pulmonary and cardiovascular complications, but also neurological and other complications.
“A huge problem is not only the issue of COVID-19 in people with risk factors for heart and vascular disease, or the cardiovascular disease itself, but also post-covid complications are a major, if not greater problem” – emphasized Prof. Banach, cardiologist, lipidologist, epidemiologist of heart and vascular diseases at the Medical University of Lodz.
“In our LATE-COVID study, we showed that they most often appear on average two months after the COVID-19 disease,” he recalled. “We are talking about the so-called long covid syndrome according to the British definition NICE, which includes both early symptoms after 4 weeks and those later symptoms in the course of the so-called of the post-COVID-19 syndrome, that is after 12 weeks “- he explained. “Importantly, complications can also occur in people who have had COVID-19 in an oligosymptomatic and asymptomatic manner” – he explained.
“Someone who breathed a sigh that the coronavirus did not cause him more troublesome symptoms and naively assumed that he had excellent immunity, may unfortunately – after some time – be affected by post-covid complications” – warned Banach.
“SARS-CoV-2 virus can cause enormous damage to the heart, lungs and other internal organs – let’s not forget about the more and more frequent neurological complications or mental problems” – noted the cardiologist. «That is why we propose that part of the funds from the medical fund under the so-called subfund for prophylaxis, allocate for the prevention and rehabilitation of post-covid complications »- argued the professor.
“We called it the prevention and treatment of post-covid complications in order to deal with it systematically as soon as possible” – he said. «In the Department of Cardiology of the Institute of Polish Mother’s Health Center in Lodz, we started a study with the acronym LATE-COVID over six months ago. We noticed that after two months, among the patients who come to us with any cardiological symptoms after having COVID-19, even a quarter have serious complications »- emphasized Maciej Banach.

«These are the most common thromboembolic complications, such as pulmonary embolism. There is also heart failure, myocarditis, the need for cardiac revascularization, or new arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation or additional contractions »- he enumerated.
“If we cannot recover from COVID-19, we are weak, we do not have the old exercise capacity, we have shortness of breath” – the cardiologist gave examples. “Let us not underestimate it, let us go to the doctor” – he appealed.

“The Cardiology Clinic of the Polish Mother’s Memorial Institute in Łódź and the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze are working on solving these problems, we monitor patients in detail and conduct intensive research to be able to predict in whom such complications may appear most often” – he informed. “I heard that there was an idea in the CSCS to create a cardiology center for post-covid complications – I think it is an excellent initiative,” Banach added.
